Professional Development

Though poetry is his primary genre, Kevin's writing falls into five categories: poetry, literary criticism, poetry book reviews, pedagogical essays, and creative non-fiction.

His full-length collection In the Evening of No Warning (New Issues Press) won a publishers grant from the Academy of American Poets and the Greenwall Fund. His textbook The Mind's Eye: A Guide to Writing Poetry has recently been published by Pearson Longman.

Kevin's poetry has appeared in numerous magazines and collections, including The Antioch Review, The Georgia Review (and Keener Sounds, the Georgia Review's fortieth anniversary retrospective), The Denver Quarterly, College English, Black Warrior Review, The South Carolina Review, American Literary Review, etc. He was co-winner of the 1997 Charles Angoff Prize for best contribution to The Literary Review. Kevin has published three chapbooks: One of Us (Mille Grazie Press, 2000), Widow Under a New Moon (Owl Creek Press, 1990), and Granting the Wolf (State Street Press, 1984). He regularly gives readings of his poetry, both locally and at conferences and festivals. His critical articles have appeared in several journals, among them The Iowa Review (on Sandra Gilbert), Papers on Language and Literature (on John Ashbery), The Southern Review (on C.G. Hanzlicek), and American Poetry (on Norman Dubie). In 2000 the Ashbery essay was selected for re-printing in Contemporary Literary Criticism. A long chapter about the poetry of Sandra McPherson appeared in A Critical Introduction to Poetry (Salem, 1992). More recently, essays have appeared in books about Charles Wright and Ruth Stone. He provided the foreword for Parlando: Selected Poems (2000) by Ray Clark Dickson.

His long essay on the role of creative writing in the English curriculum appeared in The Writer's Chronicle (1999), a publication of the Associated Writing Programs. Another essay appears in Word Tastings (1998), an anthology in which writers discuss individual words of special personal interest.

Kevin has often presented papers at conferences, including the Modern Language Association convention and the Twentieth Century Literature conference.
