This course is designed as a survey of the history of art primarily in India, China, and Japan from neolithic times roughly through the nineteenth cetury. Architecture, sculpture, gardens, and ceramics will be discussed, although emphasis will probably be on painting in the later periods of Chinese and Japanese art. The primary aim of this class is to introduce the student to the art of Asia, and to its ties to social history and culture. Emphasis will placed on development of visual skills in recognizing styles of art, analytical skills in making connections between social and cultural situations and the production of art, research skills in utilizing the World Wide Web, and writing skills in expressing ideas about art and art historical concepts. Students are highly encouraged to ask questions and share ideas.

This course will consist of lectures following the given schedule. In addition, during the class I shall give you a list of the slides to be shown during the class period. The illustrations in the Lee book for which you will be responsible on your quizzes and exams, as well as page numbers for suggested readings for each class are available in the class website. You are highly encouraged to study these as the class progresses; waiting until the day before quizzes or exams has been proven to be unsuccessful and to cause a lot of unnecessary panic. You are responsible for keeping your reading in the text current and being prepared to answer questions and discuss the material during the class period.
