This is the last homework assignment. Note that my office hours for exam week are T 9-10:30 and R 3-4:30.

• Finegan p. 165 Ex. 5-2, BUT: give THREE illustrations for each VP expansion.
• Provide tree diagrams for the following sentences:
  
  • 1.  The commuter parked her car in the garage. ("Her" is a Det.)
  • 2.  The children in the school brought cookies to their teacher. ("Their" is a Det.)
  • 3. A small asteroid landed in my yard.
  • 4. The student bought an expensive book about history.
  • 5. The men pushed the chair into the corner.
    
    There are no keys for the syntax exercises. I will correct them.

Assignments for Week 5

Tues. is our MIDTERM. The test will have two parts: an objective section, intended to take the first hour, and a practice MA question, to take the second hour. Refer to the study guide and past homework assignments, as well as class notes and the textbook, to review for the test. Only material mentioned in the study guide will be tested. Bring 2 blue books. I prefer the large ones (8.5" x 11").

To practice more with phonetic symbols, do #2 of the Weekly Transcription Practice. DO NOT use the key that is linked to the exercise. The proper key is on Blackboard under "Key to transcription exercises 1 and 2." Self-correct and hand in Tues. Also for Tues.: This exercise in analyzing English syllable structure. Also good practice for the test. Self-correct.

For Thursday: Begin reading Finegan Chapter 5. Read to p. 147; stop above "Phrase Structure Rules."

Assignments for Week 4

For Tues., 1/27: Read Finegan Ch. 4. This chapter may be somewhat confusing. You can rely on lecture to sort out difficult points and you can also bring questions to class.

Also for Tues.: Do the IPA-to-English exercise posted on Blackboard under Course Materials. The key is on the second page. Please self-correct as you did for the morphology practice last week.

For Thursday, 1/29: Try your hand at transcribing English words into IPA symbols. Do the first exercise (only) of the Weekly Transcription Practice. DO NOT use the key that is linked to the exercise. The proper key is on Blackboard under "Key to transcription exercises 1 and 2." Self-correct.

For Tues., 1/20: Read Finegan Ch. 3

Also for Tues.: 1) Do this Practice exercise in Morphological Analysis. A key is attached to the exercise, and I would like you to self-correct your work as follows: Do not erase your errors. Rather, circle them, and if you want to make the correction, write it in next to the error or elsewhere on the page. PLEASE strive to write neatly and leave space around your work so that it is easy for me to read and possibly make comments.  2) Draw word trees for repayment, reassuringly, and unshockability.

For Thurs., 1/22: 1) Go to wordspy.com. Find three examples each of new words formed by 1) compounding; 2) affixation; 3) acronyms or initialisms; 4) blends. 2) Do exercise 2-16, p. 69.
