The Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy
By the late 700s, England was organized into numerous greater and lesser kingdoms, with shifting borders, often at war with each other.
There were seven principal kingdoms: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Wessex, Sussex, and Kent.
