  • Monday: Come prepared with your Delpit Reading Questions. Also do Difficult Symbols Practice #1-30 ONLY. For Monday.
  • Finish the parsing practice exercise we began working on in class last week. It will be due Mon., 11/30, but you may want to start now in case you are going away for Thanksgiving.
Reminder: No class Tues., 11/24 (furlough day) or Weds., 11/25 ("Travel Day").

  • For Monday: Read O'Grady & Cho Sections 5 "Syntactic Development" and 6 "What makes language acquisition possible?"
  • For Monday: Weekly Transcription Exercise #6.
  • For Tuesday: Read Wheeler and Swords "Codeswitching." Answer the Reading Questions that go with this reading. Write your answers down and come prepared to discuss them with your classmates on Monday. I will collect these as a written homework assignment.
  • For Thursday: Read Delpit, "Language Diversity and Learning."   Answer the Reading Questions that go with this reading. Write your answers down and come prepared to discuss them with your classmates on Thursday. I will collect these as a written homework assignment.

  • Read for Monday the Fisher and Kruse articles on context in vocabulary learning. Prepare and bring with you answers to the Reading Questions that go with these readings. I may call on people to get responses to the questions.
  • For Wednesday and Thursday, read Newby Chapters 6 & 7. These are dense, so you might want to start on the weekend.
  • Written homework for Monday: Weekly Transcription Exercise #4; More Morphology Exercises; and the Exam Feedback survey that I sent out in an e-mail.
Project reminder: Early literacy and Vocabulary projects are due on the last day of class, Dec. 3rd. Be sure you have time to do a thorough content check and proofread your paper; read the project instructions page again carefully. Come and see me if you need any help!

  • Reminder: Mon., 9/28 is a furlough day for me. Attendance at class is required; you will view a video documentary on language acquisition. My office hour for that day is cancelled.
  • Read Delpit, "Education in a Multicultural Society." Prepare responses to the related Reading Questions. We will discuss this reading on Tues. and Weds.
  • On Thursday, 10/1, we will meet in the Teacher's Resource Collection area on the second floor of the library. There, you will preview the course materials you will be working with in the materials-evaluation projects.
  • Note to TESL certificate students: You should visit me in the office next week so we can talk about your term projects.

  • Read Newby, pp. 1-22. Finish by Wednesday.
  • Read Gee, "What is literacy?" -- This reading is available on Blackboard under "Course Materials." Finish by Thursday, but begin as soon as possible.
  • As you read, consult and answer the Reading Questions that go with each reading. Write your answers down. These are not to hand in, but will be the basis for class lecture and discussion in class.
  • Fill out Day One Student Questionnaire; due Wednesday.
