She is the author of a bilingual collection of poetry entitled, I Used to Be a Superwoman. Her poetry also appears in a major textbook, Sendas Literarias, alongside the work of three of Latin America's most famous authors: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Alfonsina Storni and Antonia Darder. At Stanford University, she was awarded the Premier and Deuxième Prix in poetry (1979) from the Department of French and Italian. Velásquez was also featured in the May 1996 issue of the Stanford Alumni Magazine. In 1989, Velásquez became the first Chicana to be inducted into the University of Northern Colorado's Hall of Fame for her achievements in creative writing.
