Analytic/Synthetic statements
Analytic/synthetic statements
According to Kant's formulation of the distinction, in an analytic statement the concept of the
predicate is contained in the concept of the subject, and we can tell that the statement is
true by analysis. In a synthetic statement, the concept of the predicate adds something new
to the concept of the subject, and the truth or falsity of the statement cannot be
determined by analysis. There has been much dispute about the adequacy of Kant's account,
but there is general agreement that synthetic statements tell us something about the world.
