Your Senior Project will consist of a 20-25 pp. research paper which effectively draws upon at least ten secondary sources to help you make convincing arguments about the primary text(s) you have chosen to study.

It is due on the day of the final oral exercise, which will take place on a mutually agreed upon date early in exam week (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday).  This final oral exercise will consist of dinner at Prof. Schwartz's home and a brief presentation to each other of the premise and conclusions of your senior project. In the event that we cannot agree on an evening during exam week to hold this event, this REQUIRED oral presentation will take place during the scheduled final exam period (Tuesday 6/8, 10:10-1:00 PM) in our normal classroom.

A class e-mail alias (engl460-01@polymail.cpunix.calpoly.edu) will be usef for announcements and discussion. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE AN E-MAIL ACCOUNT AND TO CHECK YOUR E-MAIL REGULARLY (before each class)!

Calendar of Assignments:

Please note that the on-line syllabus (not any printout you might make) is authoritative.  Assignments may be changed or modified in the course of the quarter.  Check the on-line syllabus regularly (before each class) to ensure that you are completing correct assignment.  To find the on-line syllabus, point your Web browser to http://www.multimedia.calpoly.edu/libarts/dschwart/engl460/460sylls99.html
WK 1 Orientation; expectations.
WK 2 Use Polycat to do subject, keyword, author and title searches on your research topic.  Turn in typed report of number of items found for each.
WK 3 On-line MLA Bibliography Exercise. Bring typed report of what you have found to class.

Find at least one item of interest in Kennedy library; order at least five items which sound interesting and which are NOT available at Cal Poly using CSUlink (the fastest way to get a book if one of the participating libraries owns it) or Interlibrary Loan (for books not available through CSUlink and for journal articles).   Bring print-out of Interlibrary Loan and/or CSUlink orders AND the item found in Kennedy library with you to class.

Begin work on Bibliography of resources on your topic available at Cal Poly (due Tuesday of week 5). This bibliography will be as complete as possible, including journal articles, essays in collections, full-length works by one author, and relevant entries in reference works such as the Dictionary of the Middle Ages.  NOTE: check Polycat to see if Kennedy has relevant bibliographies on your topic, and consult them as well.

WK 4 On-line Abstracts Indices Exercise.  Use Humanities Abstracts and the Extended Academic Index to
search for useful resources on your topic.  Bring typed report of what you have found to class.

Find at least one article of which the abstract sounds interesting (or a book of which the book review sounds interesting) and which is available at Cal Poly and bring it to class.  Order at least five items which sound interesting and which are NOT available at Cal Poly using CSUlink (for books only) or Interlibrary Loan (for journal articles).  Make printouts of your CSUlink or EIL orders and bring them to class.

Continue work on Bibliography of resources on your topic available at Cal Poly (due Tuesday  of week 5).  To compile this bibliography, you will use the research tools introduced to date (and any other you are familiar with) to generate a list of relevant sources and Polycat to determine whether they are available at Kennedy Library. (Note: Polycat is NOT a research database; it is merely a catalogue of Kennedy Library's collections. You MAY find some relevant sources through Polycat by doing a subject search on your author name or title, but for the most part you will use it to determine whether sources you are already aware of are available at Cal Poly.)

WK 5 Bibliography of resources on your topic available at Cal Poly due.  Be sure to use proper MLA format in documenting your sources. Alphabetize entries by author.

Work on prospectus of Senior Project, due Tuesday of week 6.  Prospectus must include a working title which clearly identifies work(s) focussed on and topic of paper; a fully articulated thesis (not just a statement of general topic); a tentative outline of paper; and a working bibliography of at least eight sources, including at least two ordered through CSUlink or Interlibrary Loan.

Use Melvyl to search the University of California Library for resources you have not yet found on your topic. Place orders through E.I.L. Types up a report of what you have found and bring it along with a print-out of your interlibrary loan orders to the next class.

WK 6 Prospectus of Senior Project due (2-3 pp. including outline and bibliography). Proofread carefully!!

Use the Online Encyclopedias on Dr. Schwartz's Homepage to search for useful encyclopedia entries on your topic.

WK 7 Web Sites Exercise. Use the Web Resources and Search Engines in your Web browser or on Dr. Schwartz's Homepage to search for useful Web sites on your topic.  Write up an evaluation of the best site you find, using proper MLA format.  Turn in to Dr. Schwartz.

Work on full bibliography for research paper (due Tuesday of week 9). Be sure to include ALL required forms of resources (journal articles, essays in collections, full-length works by one author, Web site or e-journal article) and to include resources from ALL required sources for resources (Calpoly library collections; Interlibrary Loan or CSUlink; online Web resources).

Begin drafting senior project paper.

WK 8 Use Project Muse, the Expanded Academic Index or a Search Engine (some are accessible through Dr. Schwartz's homepage) to search for an on-line scholarly article (NOT just a website) on your topic.  Write a brief report on the site or resource found, using proper MLA format.  Turn in to Dr. Schwartz.

Continue work on full bibliograpy of senior project and on draft of full project.  Optional:  turn in a thesis paragraph for critique and comments by Dr. Schwartz.

WK 9 Full bibliography of Senior Project due.  USE CORRECT MLA FORMAT!
You should have a draft of your full paper to refine and revise.
WK 10 Bibliography returned; continue revisions of Senior Project.
