Course Requirements & Grading

  1. Class Participation: You are required to read the assigned readings and come to class prepared to discuss your ideas and raise questions. Your participation grade will be measured in the following ways::

Class Presentation: (40 points) Students will be responsible for leading the class discussion at least once during the semester. This involves facilitating discussion so that the class critically reviews each author’s major argument in the assigned readings. Discussion leaders should also attempt to integrate that week's readings with what the class examined in previous sessions. A 3-5 page review of the readings is due in class, one week after the day of the class presentation. Students whose reviews are due the day of the mid term, final, or paper, will receive an extra week to hand in their papers.

Class participation, attendance. (10 points) I will assess your general class participation by awarding you up to 10 points for your active involvement in daily class discussions. I will determine these points from your attendance record and demonstrated evidence that you routinely complete the reading assignments and contribute to the classroom discussions.

  2. In class mid term exam (100 points)

  3. Critical review of either Carlos Bulosan, America is in the Heart or Darryl B. Wilson, The Morning the Sun Went Down (100 points)

  4. In class final exam. (100 points) The exam will require you to synthesize what you've learned throughout the course of the quarter.

Policy on late papers: A late paper will be graded down 1/2 a grade for every day it is late. The only exceptions are for documented medical emergencies or Calpoly-related events.

Plagiarism -- at any level -- will not be tolerated.
