    1.   Mind, Self and Society: self, self-interaction, development of the self and symbolic meaning.

        a.  Self - an acting organism, active and creative. Turn "things" into "objects" by their use. "I" spontaneous actor (self as subject), "me" guides behavior of socialized person (self as object).

        b.  Self-interaction - internal conversations the means by which human beings take things into account and organize themselves, make sense of the world around them. The basis for role taking - putting yourself in the other’s shoes

        paradigm - theories and ideas used to perceive and understand the world.

        c.  Development of the self- 1)  pre-play - meaningless , imitative acts, 2) play - role-taking  3) game - several players acting together, anticipate the moves of the others

        meaning - arises in experience, shared symbolic interpretations

        generalized other - the organized attitudes of the whole community

        d. Symbolic meaning - gesture - the beginning of a recognizable sequence of events or actions

        symbol - meaning of the stimulus (word)
