GOALS:  The goals of this course are to familiarize the student with the way in which the basic social institutions of Japan: family, religion, educational system, work and government function and the values and social practices that underlie them.  The student will come to understand the way in which individuals are prepared to be successful and achieve in Japanese society and the way the society copes with individuals and groups that do not conform to the basic patterns and structure of society.

This course requires classroom participation. Students will be expected to arrive on time for class, to answer questions, to do the readings before class, to see the films before class, to participate in discussion and to attend regularly.
