Written Assignments

There are two written assignments for the course which combined are worth 30  points. The first is a textbook survey. The second is a film analysis. Your papers should be typed, single spaced, easy to read font, 12 point. Clearly indicate article or book section summarized.

Textbook survey

Readings Summary :  Prepare a summary of each of the readings for the course.  For each article (8) a brief (1-2 sentence) paragraph of the main ideas in the article. 10 points.

Paper is due: May 21, 2009

Film analysis


Film analysis:  Select three (3) of the films for the course.  Write a brief paper in which you answer the following questions about each film.

10 points.

1. What is the moral of the story for the audience?
2. What are the giri-ninjo conflicts in the film?
3. What is the role of the individual in society and relationship to the family as shown in the story?
4. What are the significant symbolic elements in the play? (Those actions, gestures, events that mark changes in the story or emphasize important decisions.)

5. What impressions of Japanese society do you get from watching this film?

There is a film guide to help you. Be sure to indicate which question you are answering.

Remember, the course is focusing on the way in which social values and social structure are shown and reinforced in the cultural products of society. Be sure to define terms, give examples and be explicit in answering the questions.

Assignment is due: Tuesday, May 26, 2009.

Late papers will not be accepted.
