CHINESE CULTURE

GOALS:The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the underlying values and practices of Chinese society as expressed in philosophy, religion and the traditional and modern arts. The relationship of the group to the individual in society, the aesthetic values, and the expression of creativity within the culture will be explored through a major literary work: The Journey to the West. The philosophical traditions of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism will be studied for their continuing relevancy in modern China and the basic ideas behind Communism as interpreted by Mao will also be discussed.
Student Learning Outcomes Develop an understanding and appreciation of Chinese society and culture. Develop an understanding of the ideas of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and Maoism and their role in shaping Chinese society. Develop an understanding of the importance of family, religion and community in Chinese culture. Demonstrate the writing skills necessary to communicate effectively in their work. This course requires classroom participation. Students will be expected to arrive on time for class, to answer questions and participate in discussion and to attend regularly.We will be watching episodes of the story as told in China on television through animation and live action programs. Attendance will be mandatory as you will be tested on what is shown in class.Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class.
