Written Assignments
There are two written assignments for the course which combined are worth points. The first is a textbook survey. The second is a film analysis.
Text book survey: Prepare a summary of each text and reading for the course. For each book (3), a chapter by chapter synopsis of the main points the author is making (about 5-6 sentences). For each article (18) a brief (1-2 sentence) paragraph of the main ideas in the article.
Film analysis: Select three (3) of the films for the course. Write a brief paper in which you answer the following questions about each film:
a. What is the moral of the story for the audience?
b. What is the giri-ninjo conflict in the film?
c. What is the role of the individual (s) in society and relationship to the family as shown in the film?
d. What are the significant symbolic elements in the story? (Those actions, items, events the mark changes in the story or emphasize important decisions).
e. What impressions of Japanese society do you get from watching this film?
Remember, the course is focusing on the way in which social values and social structure are shown and reinforced in the cultural products of society. Be sure to define terms, give examples and be explicit in answering the questions.
