SOC 357 PEOPLE AND INSTITUTIONS JAPAN

SYLLABUS

GOALS:  The goals of this course are to familiarize the student with the way in which the basic social institutions of Japan: family, religion, educational system, work and government function and the values and social practices that underlie them.  The student will come to understand the way in which individuals are prepared to be successful and achieve in Japanese society and the way the society copes with individuals and groups that do not conform to the basic patterns and structure of society. It will also look at important issues and problems facing Japaneses society today.

As I am only teaching here for the summer and will be leaving after the summer session, it will not be possible for me to accept late assignments or be available for any consultation after August 15, 2009. Papers can be picked up in the Sociology Department office or provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope and they will be mailed to you.

This course requires classroom participation.  Students will be expected to arrive on time for class, to answer questions, to do the readings before class, to see the films before class, to participate in discussion and to attend regularly.
