The exam is a closed book exam so don't bring books or notes to class. One part of the exam will be multiple choice so be sure to have a scantron and #2 pencil. Remember to bring a blue book and scantron sheet to the exam. Study questions for the essay part of the text are given below :
Prepare a well-thought-out response. You must prepare your answers thoroughly. Generalized, vague answers will not get you a good grade. You must demonstrate you know the material well. Include dates where applicable.
The questions for the multiple choice will come primarily from the readings and lectures. You must do the readings to be able to do well on this part of the exam. Don't wait until the night before.

2. Discuss the way in which Islamic fundamentalism and anti-Western attitudes affect relations between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East.
3. According to Pierre van den Berghe (Ch 2), how do functionalists, instrumentalists, biologists and Marxists view ethnicity? How does van den Berghe define ethnicity? What evidence does he cite to substantiate this definition? How does he account for race and racism?
4. Discuss the application of the theory explaining genocide (Kitano's theory) to an understanding of the systematic elimination of the Jews in Germany under the Nazi government between 1933-1945. Be sure to discuss scapegoating and anti-Semitism. Provide examples to support your points.
5. Compare and contrast the situation of the Jews in Europe with that of the Overseas Chinese (see Sowell Ch 2). Discuss this in terms of the theory of middleman minorities (van den Berghe Ch 7). How have stereotyping and economic survival strategies affected the relations between these groups and others among whom they came to live? Provide examples.
6. Define the concepts of scapegoating and bigotry. Relate them to anti-Semitism and its impact on ethnic relations in Europe. Describe the stereotype of a Jew and relate it to the experiences of being a migratory minority. What role do religion and science play in the development of anti-Semitism in Europe?
7. Discuss terrorism as a method of political protest and intergroup dynamics by those who identify themselves as "politically powerless" in the context of the Middle East conflict. (see film "Sword of Islam" and lecture).
