This approach is used by all fields of science, it is especially important in understanding the way in which sociologists approach various topics of research.  This method is used extensively in the study of gender and race and ethnic studies.  It is part of the approach to understanding the world developed by Western civilization.  It consists of the following basic steps:

1.  Define a research problem.
2.  Review previous studies.
3.  Formulate an hypothesis.
4.  Collect and analyse data.
5.  Develop a conclusion.
