First place winner:
 
Patrick Shorb is a Ph.d candidate at Princeton University, studying under Prof. Sheldon Garon. His conference paper: "Nationalism, Liberalism, Censorship, War: Toyo Keizai Shinpo, 1937-1945," is part of his dissertation on political action of small businessmen in Kanagawa Prefecture from 1930-1960. He will be continuing his research in Japan on a Fulbright Scholarship for 1997-98. 

Second Place winner:
 
Gavin Shatkin is a Ph.D candidate at the Department of Urban Planning and Policy Development at Rutgers University. He is interested in issues of urban poverty and community development in Asian cities. His past research has especially focused on Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

He received the award for his paper:

"Social Movements for Land and Housing in southeast Asian Cities: A Case Study of Phnom Penh, Cambodia"
