 Taught in French

You will be exposed to a variety of Francophone texts of different genres.  By the end of the course, you should have a good foundation for critically reading and writing literary language in French:  the ability both in oral and written form to ask pertinent questions, to recognize and define problems, to identify the arguments on all sides of an issue, to search for and use relevant data, and to arrive at carefully reasoned judgments.

REQUIRED TEXT

SCHOFER, Peter and RICE, Donald. Autour de la littérature:  Ecriture et lecture aux cours moyens de français (5th edition)

CLASS POLICIES

You will be expected to have completed all assignments for the following sections in advance of each class ("Pré-lecture" and "Questions sur le texte"). On occasion (and unannounced), I will require you to submit copies to me. For each requested assignment that you do not submit to me at the beginning of class, your total possible "CLASS ENGAGEMENT" grade will automatically be lowered by one quarter (i.e. if you are an active oral participant in class but fail to submit two of these assignments, the highest grade you will earn for "CLASS ENGAGEMENT" will be 5 out of a possible 10 points). You are also urged to complete all assignments in the "Post-lecture" section within eighteen hours of the class during which the text in question has been studied.

Papers 1 & 2 and the composition sections of the midterms and final examination will need to be submitted using a pseudonym.

Papers 1 & 2 must be typed, double-spaced, and proof-read. They will be due at 12:10 p.m..

No late work will be accepted, even for partial credit.

It will be unacceptable for you to give or receive aid on any written work. If you have a tutor, for example, s/he cannot help you with drafts of written work to be submitted for a grade.

The identification portions of all exams must be written in pencil. Illegible copies will not be graded.

The use of cellphones or any other electronic devices--including laptop computers--during class will not be permitted.

All grade-related questions will need to be addressed with me in private during my office hours--not during class.

COURSE PREREQUISITE

Completion of General Education Area A and FR 122. Students who took FR 122 in Winter 2009 are required to have reviewed their final examinations with me by the end of the first week of class.

GRADE BREAKDOWN
CLASS ENGAGEMENT: active in-class participation and completion of all assignments--"Pré-lecture," "Questions sur le texte," "Post-lecture"; for full credit you should not merely answer questions when called upon or dutifully participate in group activities, which would likely earn you no more than 7 out of 10; in order to earn full credit, you will need to go the extra mile (10%)

MIDTERM 1 (15%)
MIDTERM 2 (15%)
FINAL EXAMINATION (30%)
PAPER 1 (15%)--Grading Rubric
PAPER 2 (15%)--Grading Rubric
