Grade Breakdown

Active Oral Participation (10%). Regular attendance is expected. Absences will negatively affect your grade.

Final Exam (30%). This will consist of sections testing the last chapter "La presse et le message" (50%), sections having already appeared on midterms (30%), and an oral interview (20%).

Midterms (40%)

Completion of all eSAM assignments (20%). These need to be completed in their entirety by the midnight deadline. Grades in italics indicated that not all work has been submitted. Assignments submitted after the deadline will not earn credit.

Extra credit can also be earned for this course (up to 7%).

Syllabus

While studying culture, literature and language, students will review basic structures in French with a variety of contextualized activities and ample communicative practice.

By the end of the course, successful students should have a greater understanding of certain aspects of French and Francophone cultures and have developed their communicative competence in French at the intermediate level. They will have acquired knowledge of: French consumer habits; eating habits; living situations in France and the Francophone world; lifestyles of young people in France today and in the past; the rise of the media in France; computerization and the importance of the press in contemporary France. They should also be able to: state preferences; give orders and directions; express intentions; describe daily routines; describe states and conditions; ask and answer questions; describe people and places; make comparisons; narrate in the past; recount past events; and inquire about past events.

In keeping with Cal Poly's learning objectives, successful students should also better be able to: think critically and creatively; communicate effectively; work productively as individuals and in groups; use their knowledge and skills to make a positive contribution to society; and make reasoned decisions based on an understanding of ethics, a respect for diversity, and an awareness of issues related to sustainability.
