Come to class prepared and don’t be afraid to take risks. Practice makes perfect.
You are expected to have read through the materials we will cover in class before each class session.  You should also attempt to complete the activities we will cover in class in advance of each class session.  Time in class will primarily be spent helping you build confidence in French and reinforcing what you should have already studied on your own.  You will not make adequate progress in French without thorough preparation for each class session.  After each class session, you should also redo all the exercises covered in class to confirm that you have fully understood them.  Then you should tackle the corresponding Centro homework.

Turn in all Centro homework by midnight on the day it is due.  No late homework will be accepted.
Centro homework is typically due the day after we complete the corresponding chapter in class.  You should plan on completing several activities per day and not wait until the last minute before completing the entire chapter’s homework.  If you do, you will not make adequate progress in French.  If you notice that you are doing poorly on certain sections of the homework, you should seek extra help from me during my office hours.  Be sure that you complete all assigned activities.  Scores in italics mean that you did not complete all the assigned activities and will thus only receive partial credit for the homework (50% maximum).

Review exams after they have been returned. Promptly discuss any questions or concerns you might have with me.

Due to cultural differences between the United States and the countries to be studied, you might find some of the authentic materials used in this course provocative. Alternative assignments can be requested for compelling reasons.

Cheating and/or plagiarism as well as the use of cellphones in class for texting or any other purposes will not be tolerated.

Daily attendance and active oral participation is required. Absences will negatively affect your grade.

Syllabus

This course will help students, who have taken FR 101 or its equivalent, further develop communicative competence in French by providing additional natural contexts and offering a variety of perspectives on Francophone culture through readings and authentic materials.

By the end of the course, successful students should further have developed their listening and speaking skills in French. They should be able to: describe their homes and neighborhoods; talk about what they do there; hear and talk about things that happened in the past; talk about what they used to do and how they felt in the past; talk about food, purchasing ingredients, preparing meals, and eating in restaurants; talk about geographical features of the Earth, weather and climates, and about ecological and environmental issues; and discuss how people can affect their environment.

In keeping with Cal Poly's learning objectives, successful students should also better be able to: think critically and creatively; communicate effectively; work productively as individuals and in groups; use their knowledge and skills to make a positive contribution to society; and make reasoned decisions based on an understanding of ethics, a respect for diversity, and an awareness of issues related to sustainability.
