Like many of my colleagues, I typically teach three classes per quarter at Cal Poly (often with well over twenty students per class). Not only is this an excessive teaching load for a university expecting its faculty members also to be engaged in serious scholarship and service, but it makes it very difficult to be true to Cal Poly's "learn-by-doing" educational hallmark. For more information, see "Staffing, Salaries, and Other Professional Issues" (available on the Modern Language Association website).
