Course Description: Music
360 is designed to reinforce the practical music skills of future classroom
teachers, to acquaint students with state (http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/mumain.asp)
and national standards, to investigate various classroom pedagogies, and to
help in creating musical activities to incorporate within classroom
teaching. The course will consist
of lecture/discussions, guided and independent performance practice, periodic
examinations, presentation of individual lessons, and the preparation of an
activity notebook.
Prerequisites: Music
100 (Music Fundamentals) or Music 101 (Introduction to Music Theory). There will be a Diagnostic Exam at the
first class meeting; this will confirm your understanding of music theory and
selected performance skills. You
must achieve a score of at least 70% on the diagnostic exam in order to take
this class. (The results will be posted at http://cla.calpoly.edu/~amclamor/360/diagnostic.html) (If you have taken Music 100 or 101, the exam will help determine if
there's anything you need to review!)
Course Requirements and
Outline:
I. Two
exams, January 25 and February 17. Each exam will count as 16% of the final grade.
II. A final on March 15 (which is cumulative). This test will constitute 16% of the course grade.
III. Two
individual performance tests.
These will be conducted in my office, by individual appointments, during
the fifth and eighth week of the course.
(Please don't be late!!)
Each performance test is worth 7%
of your course grade. Class meets as usual during these weeks.
IV.
Activity notebook. You will organize a notebook of ideas
and strategies for incorporating music into the classroom, and will evaluate
state-adopted music textbooks.
Guidelines are in the Reader.
The notebook comprises 20% of
your grade. This notebook is due
at the last regular class meeting, March
10, although some components will be due earlier.
V.
Individual lesson presentation. You will teach one of your
lesson plans (music-related activities) that you have designed for the Activity
Notebook. This presentation will
take place during the last three weeks of the course, and will constitute 8% of the course grade. Guidelines for the lesson
plans—and this presentation—are in the Reader.
VI. Individual
Assignments. You will be asked on occasion to 'lead'
others in the class in various kinds of activities, such as clapping and
counting, singing, learning new songs, conducting, and/or recorder playing. Some of these will be relatively
'spontaneous;' some will be prepared in advance. (Guidelines are in the
Reader.) Grades for these
activities will be averaged to represent 5%
of your course grade.
VII.
Attendance and Homework. Absences can slow the whole class down,
since many activities depend on in-class demonstrations and group
participation. Therefore,
attendance (including promptness!) constitutes 5% of the grade. After
one 'freebie,' absences (or tardies) will lower your
initial 'A' half a grade each occurrence.
(If you do have to miss class, you should make every effort
to contact me to see what assignments were given in your absence, since you are
expected to have them completed when due.) Failure to complete homework when assigned will also result
in a lowering of the grade by half a letter each occurrence.
VIII. Please
note that all requirements
must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in the course.
