Course Description: Music 328: Women in Music is a non-major survey course which will examine the role of women composers in the history of western art and popular musics. The course will consist of lecture/discussions, guided and independent listening, a paper, and periodic examinations.

Materials:

Textbook: Women and Music: A History, 2nd edition, edited by Karin Pendle, Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2001. Reading assignments are given below, and the Course Reader has 'reading questions' to help you focus your reading.

You will need to purchase the course reader which is available in the El Corral Bookstore. Please bring this booklet with you to class every day. It contains texts for the selections we are covering, guidelines for course reports, the contents of the course recordings, etc.

Master Recordings are in the Music Department Office (room 129) and in Kennedy Library (Learning Resources and Curriculum). Set up regular listening times in your weekly schedule, and listen often! The Music Department is open:

Mon-Thurs 8 am - 4:30 pm and 7 pm - 10 pm
Friday 8 am - 4:30 pm
Saturday 9 am - 1 pm
Sunday 12 pm - 4 pm

Prerequisites: completion of Area A and a foundation course in Area C.

Course Requirements:

I. Two Exams (20% each), on October 14 and November 4. You will need an 882 Scantron for each.

II. Two Concert Questionnaires (not factored into your grade, but required in order to pass the class). Questionnaire Guidelines and forms are in the course reader; they are due on October 28 and November 18.

III. A Final, on Wednesday, December 11, at 1:10 pm (30% of the grade). Again, bring an 882 Scantron form.

IV. A Paper. Specific guidelines are in the course reader. Read them!! The paper counts as 30% of the course grade. It is due Monday, November 25. (There are earlier due dates for the choice of topic, the bibliography, and the outline.) I frown horribly at late papers.

V. Be Here! The overwhelming material for which you are responsible will come out of the class lectures. It is difficult for you to 'hear' the music we covered when you review someone else's notes, so make regular and prompt attendance a priority.

VI. All portions of the course requirements must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in the course.
