Course Description: Music 325 is a survey
course that will examine many (but certainly not all!!) manifestations of music
in the United States. The course
will consist of lecture/discussions, a performance project, guided and
independent listening, a paper, and periodic examinations.
Materials:
Textbook and CDs: America's
Musical Landscape, by Jean Ferris (sixth edition), Boston, Mass: McGraw -
Hill, 2010. Please do your reading
done before each class meeting.
Take notes!
Supplemental Listening - recordings
will be available for listening via loaner cds from
the Music Department
Score Anthology and Reader: I have
prepared an anthology that contains scores for many of the pieces we will be
studying this quarter. There is
also a course reader that contains other support materials; I will be charging
you a nominal fee to cover the photocopying costs. Please bring your anthology and reader with you to every class
meeting.
Prerequisites: Music 105 (Music 120 recommended)
Course Requirements:
I. Two
Midterm Exams, on April 21 and May
12 (25% each).
II. A Final
Exam, on June 9 (25%).
III. A
Group Project, which will consist of
a substantial presentation and performance of some aspect of American
music. Groups should have at least
three members, but no more than five (although you may bring in additional
ÒguestÓ performers if necessary).
Guidelines are in the Reader.
(25%)
IV. Regular
and Prompt Attendance is Required. If,
through some unfortunate circumstance, you are absent or tardy, I ask that you
provide me with an explanation.
Repeated absences or tardies for reasons that
appear to be within your control will hurt your grade.
V. All
components of the course must be completed in order to receive a passing grade.
Failure to meet your presentation due date will normally
result in failing the course, unless you have met with me beforehand and
we have agreed on a valid reason for a deadline extension.
