Course Description: Music 315 is designed both to develop the practical music skills of future classroom teachers and to help them in creating musical activities to incorporate within their teaching. The course will consist of lecture/discussions, guided and independent performance practice, periodic examinations, presentation of individual lessons, and the preparation of an activity notebook.

Materials:

New Approaches to Elementary Classroom Music (Third Edition) by Rebecca M. Herrold; New York: Prentice Hall, 2001.

Music X315- Course Reader - available for a nominal fee from Second Edition copy center on campus

You will also need a plastic recorder and a tablet of music paper, both available in the bookstore.

Please bring your materials to every class meeting.

Prerequisites: Completion of GE Area A, or consent of the instructor.

Course Requirements:

I. Two Exams, January 30 and February 25. Each exam will count as 15% of the final grade.

II. A Final (which is cumulative). This test will constitute 20% of the course grade.

III. Two individual performance tests. These will be conducted in my office outside of class time, by individual ten-minute appointments, during the fourth and ninth week of the course. (Don't be late!!) Each performance test is worth 5% of your total course grade. Class meets as usual during these weeks.

IV. Activity notebook. You will organize a notebook of ideas and strategies for incorporating music into the classroom, and will evaluate state-adopted music textbooks. Guidelines are in the Reader. The notebook comprises 20% of your grade. This notebook is due at the last regular class meeting, March 13.

V. Individual lesson presentation. You will teach one of your lesson plans (music-related activities) that you have designed for the Activity Notebook. This presentation will take place during weeks eight through ten of the course, and will constitute 10% of the course grade. Guidelines for the lesson plans–and this presentation–are in the Reader.

VI. Individual Assignments. You will be asked on occasion to 'lead' others in the class in various kinds of activities, such as clapping and counting, singing, learning new songs, conducting, and/or recorder playing. Some of these will be relatively 'spontaneous;' some will need to be prepared in advance. Grades for these activities will be averaged to represent 5% of your course grade.

VII. Attendance and Homework. Absences can slow the whole class down, since many activities depend on group participation. Therefore, attendance (and promptness!) constitute 5% of the grade. After one 'freebie,' absences (or tardies) will lower your initial 'A' half a grade each occurrence. (If you do have to miss class, you should make every effort to contact me to see what assignments were given in your absence.) Written homework assignments are not frequent in this course, but failure to complete homework when assigned will also result in a lowering of the grade by half a letter each occurrence.

VIII. Please note that ALL requirements must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in the course.
