Course Description: Music 100 is an introduction to the practical skills of music theory and musicianship, in which you will learn to read, notate, and perform music through various media. The course will consist of lecture/discussions, guided and independent performance practice, and periodic examinations. All components of the course must be completed in order to recieve a passing grade in the class.

Materials:

Music Skills for Classroom Teachers (Ninth Edition) by Robert Winslow, Leon Dallin, and Shelley B. Wiest; Dubuque, Iowa: Wm. C. Brown Publishers, 2001.

Music 100 - Course Reader - available for a nominal fee from Second Edition copy center on campus

You will also need a plastic recorder and a tablet of music paper, both available in the bookstore. A small amount of music staff paper is included in your reader, but you may wish to purchase more.

Please bring your materials to every class meeting and performance test.

Prerequisites: none.

Course Requirements:

I. Four written quizzes. Each quiz will count as 15% of the final grade. See the course outline below for the dates. The format will be similar to your homework assignments and in-class practice assignments.

II. A Final (cumulative), which will constitute 20% of the course grade.

III. Three individual performance tests. These will be conducted in my office as individual 10-minute appointments (outside of classtime), during the fourth, sixth, and ninth week of the quarter. You will sign up for an appointment during class shortly before each day of testing (and then the sign-up sheet will be posted next to my office door for reference). Each performance test is worth 5% of your total course grade. Class meets as usual during these weeks. Don't worry, you'll live (no casualties yet!) If you know you're struggling with a performance skill, tell me before your performance appointment; I will help you master any problems and may willing to delay your test, if you let me know beforehand. Once you come in for your appointment, you need to be prepared. Please give me 24 hours notice if you need to change your appointment; missed appointments will lower your grade.

IV. Attendance and Homework. 5% of your grade. Since the material we will cover builds on itself, regular attendance is essential, as are the homework assignments. The homework will also help prepare you for each exam. Undone homework and unexcused absences (or tardies) will lower your initial "A" half a grade each occurrence. In general, if you don't inform me as to why you were gone, I'll consider it an unexcused absence. Communication is helpful here!

V. Keep up! Let me help! Nearly everything you will learn builds on previous material, so if you miss class, or want extra help, please see me -- before you bomb a test. (See me after you bomb a test, too, but let's try to keep that from happening!) If you know you'll be gone at a certain time, let me know. The quarter system moves too quickly to let even one class meeting go by without understanding the material.
