WGS at the Public Library
The WGS Department is proud to announce our new speaker series, WGS at the Public Library. This speaker series will be in the Community Room at the SLO Public Library on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00-8:00 p.m., beginning in January 2009 and ending in May 2009. WGS is pleased to present this speaker series in conjunction with the adult education program at the San Luis Obispo Public Library. In WGS, please contact Dr. R. Dr. Jean Williams will give a talk entitled “Abstinence-Only Sex Education and the Politics of Virginity”
Short Abstract: Do you know what your children are learning in sex education classes? Dr. Jean Williams will critique abstinence-only sex education and discuss her latest book, The Politics of Virginity: Abstinence in Sex Education
February 3, 2009, 6:00-8:00 p.m.:
Dr. Patrice Engle will give a talk entitled “Women around the world: Challenges and Triumphs”
Short Abstract: This presentation will discuss the status of women in the Majority World, where 90% of the world's women live - the challenges that they are facing to achieve equal rights and examples of successes. Finally we will examine innovative ways that American women can give a them a helping hand.
March 3, 2009, 6:00-8:00 p.m.:
Dr. Judy Saltzman-Saveker will give a talk entitled "The Bitch Manifesto Revisted: Feminism, Gender and Religion"
Short Abstract: This talk will be a survey and analysis of some of the literature and writers who proclaimed "The Witch Manifesto," objecting to male dominance and bias against women in religions and even in religious studies. The import and result of the critiques of Catholic and Protestant Theology of such scholars as Mary Daly,Rosemary Radford Reuther, and Starhawk, a Wicca Priestess, will be discussed.
April 7, 2009, 6:00-8:00 p.m.:
Dr. Camille O’Bryant will give a talk entitled “Title IX: History, Impact and Implications for Girls and Women in Sport”
Short Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the historical and contemporary impact and implications of Title IX, especially in relation to the participation of girls and women in sport.
May 5, 2009, 6:00-8:00 p.m.:
Dr. Sandra Jean Wetzel will give a talk entitled “Art History's Bad Girls: Courtesans in the Art of China and Europe?”
Short Abstract: Artists, patrons and models - Women of the courtesan class played a surprisingly important role in the visual art of both China and the West. This talk will explore that role, focusing primarily on Classical and Renaissance Western art, as well as Ming-dynasty Chinese painting.
