Suicide Prevention Forum and LGBTQ Ally Training

4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12
San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church
This Ally Training provides a basic framework of understanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and the unique challenges they face. The presentation will provide an overview of suicide among LGBTQ youth and the different environmental stressors that contribute to a heightened risk for suicide. Attendees will leave with specific action items to improve the environment for LGBTQ youth. 

CLA Speaks: 'Elephants Without Borders: Conservatives in the Academy

Jon A. Shields, author and associate professor of government at Claremont McKenna College, will give his talk on conservatives in academia, discussing how a conservative might enter into an academic profession as well as what it’s like to work in a left-dominated field.

Explore the 100-year history of Cal Poly’s student press in a multimedia exhibit. The keynote speech, “Storytelling at National Geographic: How a legacy brand is succeeding in the digital age” presented by Editor in Chief of National Geographic Susan Goldberg, will take place at 3 p.m.

Five panelists will discuss preparing students for the next 100 years of journalism. Panelists include Susan Goldberg, Editor in Chief of National Geographic; David Kerley, ABC News correspondent; Andrew Paley, Chief Scientist at Narrative Science; Christian Hendricks, Vice President of Products, Marketing and Innovation at McClatchy Co.; and Burt Herman, Co-founder of Storify and Hacks/Hackers. Peter King, LA Times correspondent, will moderate and Kevin Riggs, Senior Vice President of Randle Communications will emcee.

Spotlight Gala Dinner and Mustang Media Hall of Fame Celebration

Journalist and author Ben Bradlee Jr. will give the keynote address. The former deputy managing editor of the Boston Globe led the paper’s 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning series on abuse in the church. His team’s investigation was the basis for “Spotlight,” winner of the 2016 Academy Award for Best Picture. The Journalism Department will also induct the inaugural class of a new Mustang Media Hall of Fame.

Mark Noce: Book Signing
2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15
Barnes & Noble, 894 Marsh Street, Bldg. G, San Luis Obispo
Cal Poly alumnus Mark Noce will sign copies of his debut novel, “Between Two Fires,” at Barnes & Noble. The novel was published by St. Martin’s Press this August.
