Cal Poly Graphic Communication Students Win Technical Writing Competition

Cal Poly graphic communication students Mallory Mize and Hannah Stombler-Levine won first and second place, respectively, in the 2014 GEF/Flint Group Technical Writing Competition.

Mize’s first-place paper is titled, “Cylinder Engraving Methods and Print Quality.”  Stombler-Levine was honored for her work, “Potential Areas of Growth in Rotogravure.” Both essays were developed in Cal Poly’s course Web Offset and Gravure Printing Technologies taught by graphic communication Professor Kevin Cooper.

Mize and Stombler-Levine join a tradition of Cal Poly success at the competition, with the university winning first place eight times in the past nine years, including six years of students winning both first- and second-place honors.

The Flint Technical Writing Competition is a national contest for student technical research papers on the topic of gravure, a major print process. Submitted essays are judged on rigorous standards of relevance to the topic, depth and complexity of research, organization and clarity.

First-place winners are awarded cash prizes of $1,000 and second-place winners receive $500. In addition, award recipients receive an honorable Award for Technical Achievement, which includes an invitation to the 2014 Educators Breakfast and publication of their papers on the Gravure Association of the Americas website.
