Cal Poly's Bakari Project Graduates Five Students

Bakari Mentorship Program Cal Poly

The Cal Poly-based Bakari Project Mentoring Program — designed to encourage social responsible behavior among at-risk youth — graduated five students from this fall’s program: Brian Bellrose, Joel Garcia, Camilo Felipe, Gabe West and Andrew Wilson.

The program, derived from the Bakari Project in Irvine started by Thomas Parham, began at Cal Poly in November 2008. Cal Poly students assist with the mentoring under the guidance of , an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Child Development at Cal Poly.  Mentors work closely with students to encourage responsibility and productivity, including ways to avoid illegal activity and stay on track to attend college.

This year’s mentors were Ryan Brekke, Jessica Berry, Danielle Gillett, Danna Tejada, Megan Sirna, Breehan Yohe-Mellor, Gabrielle Bernal, Amir Rafie, Morgan Roth and Vanessa Dowell.

The project is funded by California juvenile justice realignment funds through the County Probation Department; it has received funding from the county Sheriff’s Department.
