:: Senior Project Guidelines ::

FORL 460 (4 Units)

  1. Students will sign up (one quarter in advance) for FORL 460 during one of the last three quarters of their senior year. Prerequisites completed: (FORL 210, SPAN 301, and 121 in secondary language) .
  2. Students will complete a Senior Project requiring between 60-80 (including write-up) hours of research, faculty advising and preparation time.
  3. Decide on the topic that you will pursue: In MLL, students in the past have done Scholarly papers on literature, linguistics or culture, web sites, video from book adaptations, community service, tutoring, etc.
  4. Talk to a faculty member in MLL with whom you would like to work with and see if s/he will serve as your Senior Project Advisor. A contract between the student and his/her senior project advisor will be signed. Obtain the contract with the advisor.
  5. Senior Projects normally require a paper of between 25-35 pages. Electronic submissions must follow library requirements.
  6. Once your advisor has agreed to work with you, have him/her sign your senior project contract and turn it back into the MLL office.
  7. You must also have an abstract approved by the Senior Project advisor. Your abstract must be no longer than one typed page, double-spaced. Your abstract must contain the following:

    1 paragraph describing your project
    1 paragraph describing the methodology you will use
    1 paragraph describing the outcomes of the proposed senior project (e.g., how the Senior Project
    will be a "Capstone" experience for your studies in MLL.
  8. Obtain the permission to register for Senior Project from your Senior Project Advisor.
  9. Purchase The Senior Project Handbook at El Corral Bookstore. This document will provide you with specific technical details regarding your senior project, including all signature pages that need to be submitted.
  10. All Senior Projects must be submitted no later than the end of the 10th week of the quarter in which students signed up in order for the Senior Project to receive a grade.
  11. Print 2 copies of Senior Project Requirement Form and fill out.
  12. Pay the Senior Project submission fee at the Cashier's office in the administration building before submitting final draft to your advisor.

    Final Draft Specifications:
  • Unbound
  • Two copies of the abstract (1 page only); if the content of your Senior Project has changed, you must update the abstract and have it approved before final submission.
  • Bibliography as appropriate. Documentation must observe MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (6th ed. 1999-or later) and html codes if electronic (no more than 25%).
  • Research papers must include how to find additional information; that is, on the proposed topic of the project; what additional information would be relevant to students or faculty and how to find it in conclusion.
