Douglas Bradley Smith, 52, of San Luis Obispo, died Dec. 18,1999, of lung cancer at his home. He was surrounded by family and friends.
A memorial service is planned for early January.
Mr. Smith was born March 25, 1947, in New Jersey, the third of five sons born to Harold and Kathryn Smith.
He was reared on Long Island and studied psychology at Johns-Hopkins University. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1969 and went on to obtain his master's at Fairfiled University. He received his doctorate in rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1979.
He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan from 1971 through 1973. He joined the faculty of Cal Poly's English Department in 1977 and taught a variety of subjects, ranging from World English to Web Authoring, and technical writing to linguistics.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Kathy.
He is survived by his loving companion, Dan Vasquez; his daughters, Kira and Xela Smith; their mother, Barbara Lee Bailey; his brothers, Randall, Jeffrey, Gary and Russell Smith and their wives, Barbara, Mary, Teresa and Melissa; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
