No one is not touched by media.

Media pervade our lives and, in large measure, help to form our world views.

Here in the Journalism Department, we teach students about the public service function that they will carry out as media professionals. Unlike other aspects of media where advocacy and personal beliefs drive content, we are obligated to report the news and the truth to the degree that we can determine it to be.

As such, we are the common touchstone of civil society. When we are believed, we set the terms of debate and provide the means to reach the resolution of issues. When we are doubted, all manner of "junk" information muddies the discourse and few can trust the outcome.

In news-editorial, broadcasting, multimedia and public relations, we offer the chance to be a part of a process that guides both the present and future of society.

- Bill Loving, Professor of Journalism
