Media Arts and Technologies Minor
Cal Poly takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study and practice of Media Studies with its Media Arts and Technologies Minor offered through the Humanities Program. The 28-unit minor brings together new and existing courses in Humanities, Theatre Arts, English, Computer Science, Art & Design, Graphic Communications, and other programs. It provides students the opportunity to emphasize technical design and/or narrative construction. The minor begins in Fall 2011.
Partner Facilities
The Media Arts and Technologies Minor makes use of partner, satellite labs and technical facilities that are already present on campus and provides the technical depth that reflects the disciplines that currently manage these different facilities. The software and hardware installed in all these labs supports professional-level video and audio editing, a full rage of writing, graphic design, and still image manipulation needs, and most of these labs also support a number of specialized programs for 3D display and image creation. Each of these labs also provide specialized software for different areas of expertise that range from 3D modeling, to advanced project management/planning, to GIS interaction, to code development and testing. All these labs are designed to accommodate between 10-20 students working individually or in teams, and all these labs also provide decent means for projection and sound monitoring at at least one "teacher" station.
Our partner labs are:
- Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies Expressive Technologies Workshop
- Computer Science Interactive Entertainment / Game Design lab
- College of Architecture CIDS lab
- Art and Design 3D modeling and color design lab
- Graphic Arts and Communications print and paper technologies lab
- Theater and Dance Department Black Box theater, performance space and computer design lab
- CENG packaging materials testing space
- Architectural Engineering Construction materials testing and development workshop
