Program Graduates' Testimonials

The English M.A. program at Cal Poly prides itself on preparing its students for professional success.  Here are a few examples of satisfied graduates.

Elizabeth Chamberlain

Elizabeth Chamberlain (Class of 2010): "The Cal Poly English Master's program is a student-focused program at a teaching-focused school: classes are small, professors are not overwhelmed with a "publish-or-perish" atmosphere, and students reap the benefits of that attention. Every quarter, I received detailed feedback on my writing from a variety of brilliant mentors. Plus, I earned real-world experience, working at the University Writing and Rhetoric Center and teaching English 134. Most importantly for me, though, the program was broad enough that I had time and opportunity to explore a variety of potential career paths within English—I've ended up in a subfield I didn't know existed three years ago."

Brinn Strange

Brinn Strange (Class of 2011): "The knowledgeable and supportive faculty at Cal Poly gave me the courage to set ambitious goals for myself and to achieve them. My professors encouraged me in my academic and professional development, inspiring me to present at conferences and to teach. Though extremely challenging, my time as a Teaching Associate pushed me outside of my comfort zone and strengthened me as an individual; most significantly—after a few quarters of teaching—I discovered my desired career path. The thorough preparation I received at Cal Poly gave me the confidence to excel in my current position as an English instructor at The University of Southern Mississippi. Though I miss the idyllic environment of San Luis Obispo, the MA program at Cal Poly ensured that I could find success in any climate."

Zach Drew

Zach Drew (Class of 2011): "My experience in the English MA program at Cal Poly was personally and academically enriching. As a conditional admit with little background in English, I began the program with a degree of hesitation; however, thanks to engaging coursework and consummate professors, my initial trepidation was soon replaced by enthusiasm. The rigorous classes, skilled faculty, and supportive student community create an ideal environment in which to develop as both a scholar and an individual. Throughout the course of my graduate studies, I grew tremendously as a writer, a teacher, and a thinker. Though I am now pursuing a career as an English instructor, the comprehensive nature of the program makes it a perfect fit for anyone passionate about English, regardless of where that passion will ultimately take them."

Ed Turner

Ed Turner (Class of 2011): "Probably the most valuable part of the program was the sense of camaraderie it created, both among the students and between the students and faculty. Rather than being part of a faceless hoard, competing for recognition, the students were mutually supportive… we were a family of academics, studying together for classes or the Master’s Exam, and getting to know one another. Just as important was the openness and approachability of the faculty; they opened their offices and homes to us, both as professors and friends."
