The Major

Table of Contents:

We have designed it so that English majors have a core of historically based courses and a series of electives. There is a balance between what is required of all majors, and what each student can select following her or his own interests. In general, the following requirements apply to students admitted to Cal Poly under the 2007-2009 catalogue. If you were admitted on an earlier catalogue, earlier requirements may apply to you.

English majors at Cal Poly are required to take six historically based CORE courses in British and American literature, in order, beginning with medieval and ending with modern and contemporary.

English majors must also take:

  • ENGL 251, Great Books of World Literature: Classical and Ancient World
  • ENGL 290, Introduction to Linguistics
  • 8 units of 300-level English electives
  • 20 units of 400-level English electives
    • (16 of these 28 total units of 300 and 400-level electives may be applied to an optional emphasis area if you wish--see below)
  • 1 unit Senior Project Adjunct course
  • Language Other than English
    • English majors must demonstrate 200-level proficiency in a modern language other than English. Students should plan on demonstrating proficiency in a modern language other than English as soon as possible upon entering the university, either by successfully completing 121 or 122 in their language of choice, or by providing other evidence of competence (i.e., passing a challenge exam).
No major or support courses may be taken CR/NC.

Normally, students will begin the CORE sequence during the fall or winter quarter of their sophomore year. These courses are offered sequentially and MUST be taken in order. *optimally, ENGL 290 will be taken sometime during the sophomore year.

**8 units of 300-level English electives may be taken as soon as the student has completed the appropriate course in the CORE

***During one quarter of senior year

NOTE: As the major matures, our plan is to offer each of the CORE courses twice a year, back to back. That is, ENGL 203 will be offered every fall and winter; ENGL 204 every winter and spring; ENGL 205 every spring and fall; and so on, so that if a student should fall behind in the sequence, he/she could "catch up" by taking the missed course the following quarter.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: The four-year sequencing plan sketched above includes major courses only. You will also need to incorporate G.E.&B. requirements and elective courses into your plans as you proceed. Generally speaking, it is best to spread your lower division G.E.&B. requirements over the several quarters of your freshman and sophomore years, linking courses, as your time constraints and their availability allow, to provide for a balanced and interesting conjunction of courses. Your advisor can help you with these selections if necessary. Your advisor can also help with your selection of a minor, if you wish to complete one, as well as with selection of free electives independent of a minor. Please feel free to take advantage of his/her expertise in these areas.
