About the College

Welcome from Dean Linda H. Halisky

Dear Friends and Supporters of the CLA,

The liberal arts have been an integral part of Cal Poly since the university’s inception in 1901, when English composition, physical geography, and history and government were established as required courses in Cal Poly students' curriculum.

Over the years, the liberal arts of Cal Poly has developed into the current College of Liberal Arts (CLA),  16 departments offering 18 majors, four master’s programs and 29 minors. Four broad areas of knowledge are represented: the fine and performing arts, communications, the humanities and the social sciences.

I am proud of the CLA’s great breadth and diversity and fully believe that unity is found in the overarching study of its most engaging subjects of all—human experience and human expression.

Further, as a liberal arts college within a leading polytechnic university, we strive to connect CLA coursework to Cal Poly’s scientific and technological disciplines in ways that help solve a wide range of human problems. This prepares our students for the many challenges ahead as they emerge as conscientious citizens of our nation and insightful members of the global community.

The college is also home to Cal Poly Arts and the Faye & Alex Spanos Theatre, in conjunction with, the Performing Arts Center, showcase the best of student drama, dance, and music performances, as well as host productions by community, regional, and touring artists.

On behalf of the entire college, I invite you to explore our Web site, visiting it often to discover the aspirations and accomplishments of our distinguished students, faculty and programs.

Sincerely yours,

Linda H. Halisky, Dean
