College of Liberal Arts Change of Major

Change of Major Criteria and Procedures (updated 02/01/2011)

General Information

ALL majors in the College of Liberal Arts are “impacted,” which means all departments in the college have already turned away large numbers of highly qualified applicants from high schools and other institutions because of space limitations. Consequently, departments have high standards for students requesting to transfer into these majors from other programs in the college and the university. Because of the high demand for our majors, we will not be able to accommodate all requests to transfer; current Cal Poly students may have to transfer to another university in order to pursue a degree program other than the one into which they were admitted upon application to Cal Poly.

Each major department sets its own criteria for internal transfers (current Cal Poly students who wish to change majors) consistent with the university’s policy on change of major (please see http://www.academicprograms.calpoly.edu/academicpolicies/Policies-Undergrad/Change-major.html). In addition to meeting the individual department standards listed below, all students transferring into the College of Liberal Arts must be in good academic standing at the time of the transfer.

Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA)

Any student wanting to change his/her major must meet with the department chair (or designee) in the target major to discuss a change of major and to set up an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA). This ICMA will serve as a contract, and will be valid for no more than two academic quarters. Students must meet the requirements as set forth by each department and outlined in the ICMA by the end of this period in order to be accepted into the target major.

Additional ICMA Guidelines:

  • Students must complete at least one (1) quarter at Cal Poly before requesting a change of major.
  • One chance to be accepted – Students who enter into an ICMA and do not complete its requirements will not be eligible to request the major again later in their career at Cal Poly. In this event, students are advised to consider the target major as a minor, if appropriate.
  • Completion of Change of Major – The change of major will be approved once the student has successfully met all of the requirements of the ICMA.
  • The ICMA must be completed in no more than two quarters.
  • The ICMA will be terminated if a student is academically disqualified prior to the completion of the agreement.
  • For students entering as freshmen or upper division transfers starting in Fall 2010, students must be able to finish the requirements for the target major without exceeding 204 total units (208 total units for Art & Design majors)   or a length of time enrolled at Cal Poly of four years plus one academic quarter. Students who entered Cal Poly prior to Fall 2010 will also need to demonstrate that they can complete the new target degree in a timely manner (preferably in no more than 204 total units or a length of time enrolled at Cal Poly of four years plus one academic quarter).

NOTE: The above policy also applies to students wishing to add a second major.

Anthropology-Geography & Sociology

The change of major is accomplished by completing an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA), which is available through the Social Sciences Department office. The change of major will be approved once the student has successfully met all of the requirements delineated on the ICMA. The ICMA must be feasible to complete and be completed in no more than two quarters.

Students must complete at least one quarter at Cal Poly before requesting a change of major.

Requesting a Change of Major

Students should meet with the Chair of the Social Sciences Department to complete the ICMA. The following will be incorporated into the ICMA:

  • Students need to complete three courses with the major prefix (ANT or GEOG for the Anthropology-Geography major or SOC for the Sociology major)
  • Students will be required to complete STAT 217 or STAT 221 with a C- or better.
  • Students must have a Cal Poly cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, or a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better in each of the last two consecutive quarters.
  • Students must not be on Academic Probation at the time of the interview.

The above policy also applies to students wishing to add a major offered by the Social Sciences Department as a second major.

Students who enter into an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA) with the department and are not accepted into the Anthropology-Geography major or Sociology major within two quarters will not be eligible to reapply to that major. In this event, students are advised to consider pursuing a minor offered by the Social Sciences Department.

Art & Design

The Department of Art and Design has established a policy and procedure regarding applications for major changes into our program. Please read this information carefully. If there is any part you do not fully understand, ask our office staff for clarification.

Portfolios for major change applicants are reviewed three times each academic year, once during each of the following quarters: fall, winter and spring. We are not accepting applications for second majors. (As an alternative, please review our art minor programs.)

Please notify the department office of your intent to change majors during the third week of the quarter in which you wish to be reviewed, when you will be given information about the portfolio review for that quarter. Sample portfolio requirements and assigned projects can be found on our web site at: http://artdesign.calpoly.edu/ under the “Documents and Forms” tab.

POLICY:

Academic:  All applicants must have a CPSLO Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and a Last Graded Term at Cal Poly GPA of at least 2.3 (must have completed at least one quarter at Cal Poly to apply for a major change). Failure to meet either of these academic minimums renders the applicant ineligible to apply. Students on academic probation are not eligible.

In addition, applicants must not have previously applied to change their major to Art & Design at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Portfolio:  All applicants must submit a portfolio of their own work that meets all minimum requirements outlined in the portfolio requirements, and meet the portfolio due date immediately preceding the review date desired.

PROCEDURE:

Notification to the Department:

The first step is to come to the department office and notify us of your intent to change your major to our program. This can be done during the third week of fall, winter or spring quarters. You will be given the Major Change Applicant letter, which specifies portfolio requirements, including assigned project options for graphic design and studio art, review processing forms, and a due date for all materials.

Portfolio Submission for Review:

Submit a portfolio of your work appropriate for the concentration of your choice. All required materials must be submitted together by the due date as outlined in the Major Change Applicant letter.

Review Outcome Notification:

Within a week after the review date, you will be notified via your Cal Poly email address as to the outcome of the portfolio review.  If you have been accepted, your major change form/ICMA will be developed and processed by the department office, and you will need to meet with the department chair before registering for classes in the next quarter.

Including optional material DOES NOT mean that the candidate will have a greater likelihood of being accepted into the major.
  5. Applicants must submit all materials to the department office no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday of the 5th week of Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters. The Department will not accept applications during the Summer term.

Theatre Arts

Step #1: Requesting a Change of Major

  • Meet with your current department advisor to review major options and talk about career paths. Consider, also, consulting with Career Services, other advisors, and faculty and/or department heads/chairs in both your current major and Theatre;
  • Meet with the Theatre Program Chair/Associate Chair to determine the likelihood of success in the Theatre major; what is your commitment to the discipline as well as your career aspirations? How do you see yourself being a successful member of the Theatre program?
  • Review the curriculum requirements for the Theatre major;
  • Enlist a faculty "sponsor" who will help guide students in the change of major process;
  • Write a two (2)-page essay describing why you wish to change into Theatre Arts at Cal Poly and your projected professional goals as related to a theatre education. Student essays will be submitted to faculty sponsor and then presented to the faculty. The essay itself will be evaluated by the quality of written expression - including clarity, organization, precision of thought, grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax as well as evidence of your commitment to the discipline and your potential for success in both major and post-graduation activities.
  • After consideration from the full faculty, if the Theatre major is not a good fit for the student, the student will be advised to look at other options;
  • If the student receives a positive assessment, then an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA) (see below) will be developed.

Step #2: Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA) Criteria

  • Minimum Time - Students must complete at least one (1) quarter at Cal Poly before requesting a change of major;
  • Theatre classes - Students must take/have taken TH210 and two (2) additional Cal Poly Theatre Program academic or production courses;
  • Minimum Theatre grades - Students must earn/have earned an average grade of B or higher in TH210 and the additional Theatre Program academic or production courses;
  • Good Academic Standing - Students must have a cumulative Cal Poly GPA of at least 2.2 and be in good academic standing;
  • Graduate on-time - Students must be able to demonstrate, in writing, the ability to complete degree requirements within the minimum progress standards (204 units or four years plus one academic quarter);

Step #3: Complete Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA)

  • The change of major will be complete once a student has successfully met all of the criteria (see above) of the Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA)

General Guidelines/Information

  • One Chance to be accepted - Students who enter into an Individualized Change of Major Agreement (ICMA) and do not complete the ICMA requirements will not be eligible to request the Theatre major again later in their career at Cal Poly. In this event, students are advised to consider pursuing a Theatre minor.
  • Completion of Change of Major - The change of major will be approved once the student has successfully met all of the requirements of the ICMA.
  • Timeframe - The ICMA must be completed in no more than two quarters.
  • Void - the ICMA will be terminated if a student is academically disqualified prior to the completion of the agreement.

The above policy also applies to students wishing to add the Theatre Arts major as a second major.
