Club 34 (Art
& Design)
Art
Exhibits- Under our Art Exhibits program we
hold exhibitions in the University Art Gallery in
Dexter Building as our primary facility. A second
satellite facility, the Photo Gallery, is in the
alcove at the front circulation desk in Kennedy
Library. Our principal exhibition schedule runs
in our main gallery, and small exhibits of our photography
students’ work run in the satellite gallery.
Both of these galleries function as local learning
sites where our students are exposed to the display
of professional artwork. In these, we plan annual
exhibitions representing each of the specific areas
and communities of our program—Graphic Design,
Photography, Studio/2D, Studio/3D, Faculty, Students,
and Graduates. Our students have participated in
a wide range of activities from designing exhibition
announcements and brochures, to assisting in exhibit
designs, to helping pack and unpack artwork at these
other sites. Enrollment in the ART 336 Exhibition
Design/Museum Studies, while beneficial in providing
students with formal theory and practice in the
gallery exhibition area of study, is NOT required
of all students who participate in or benefit from
our Art Exhibits program. |

Psi Omega – APO sponsors student-directed
one-act plays, workshops, career days, guest speakers
as well as a variety of social, membership-building
events.

Orchesis
Dance Company – The Orchesis Dance Company
will produce a concert with performances at the
Cal Poly Theatre during Winter Quarter. This is
their main IRA funded event and the thrust of DANC
345 and DANC 346 activities (although, they also
perform locally for community and campus events).
The concert will be composed of works created by
students enrolled in DANC 345 and 346, the works
of professional guest choreographers involved, and
the guest works commissioned, and usually includes
ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip hop, lyrical, and
ballroom dance. IRA funds also help fund a fall
field trip to either Los Angeles or San Francisco
where class members take dance classes in an established
studio, watch a professional dance concert, and
usually participate in an informal concert. These
activities are designed to strengthen the technical
and artistic base of the company. In the winter,
selected students will attend the American College
Dance Festival, which is a four day festival, varying
in location and season from year to year (next year’s
location has not been selected yet). Students will
perform one of the dances previously learned in
an adjudicated situation, take daily dance classes,
and attend workshops, lectures, and nightly concerts.
This is an incredible learning opportunity.
Drama
The program objective is to produce three main-stage,
faculty directed productions per year in the Cal
Poly Theatre. The director and designer of each
production are faculty members. Students participate
as actors, stage managers, or members of the scenic
crew who create the sets, costumes, and props and
run the actual production. Students may receive
academic credit for any of these activities. Recent
productions include Greek and Shakespearean classics,
musicals, and world-premiere and Pulitzer Prize-winning
plays.
FANS
– The Theatre Department's extremely active
support group, FANS, is a non-profit organization,
established and developed by Cal Poly Theatre Alumni
and affiliated with the Cal Poly Alumni Association. |

Mat
Pica Pi — Mat Pica Pi is the social/service
club of the Graphic Communication Department at
Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. While the club routinely
takes care of department events (WOW Week, Printing
Week, Open House, etc.), they also provide club-specific
events, such as BBQs, sporting events, movie nights,
etc. Overall, Mat Pica Pi tries to increase the
camaraderie of the department as well as enhance
the "school spirit" a bit in the process.

Shakespeare Press Museum
Cal Poly students have the opportunity to enrich
their educational experience by managing the operation
of a working printing museum. The museum will provide
an interdisciplinary experience that incorporates
history, graphic communication, art, and theatre,
with aspects of mechanics, chemistry, and physics
demonstrated in a well-researched historical collection.
The collection will incorporate traditional signage
and graphics as well as multi-media presentations,
all designed and produced by students. Costumed
student actors depicting key historical figures
such as Benjamin Franklin and Johann Gutenberg will
conduct tours and presentations to the public. Students
will be integrally involved in all phases of the
Shakespeare Press Museum including layout and enhancement
of the collection, training of student docents,
production of limited edition books, publicity,
and financial management of the museum. The museum
will provide a valuable experience not only for
the students directly participating in the activity,
but also for students in a variety of classes including
Graphic Communication, Art, History, Theatre, and
other majors. It is also anticipated that this IRA
will benefit the larger community by offering group
tours to elementary schools, groups of senior citizens,
and tourists to the Central Coast. |

Singers Club – Barbershop Quartet - Cal
Poly Men's Barbershop Quartet has been selected
to represent Cal Poly and compete in the 2002 International
Collegiate Barbershop Competition on July 4th in
Portland, OR. Only the top 25 out of 500 quartets
in the world are invited to compete internationally,
and Grand Avenue is among the top 25.
Chamber Orchestra - The chamber
orchestra presents a minimum of one concert each
quarter. It is also the group out of which various
chamber ensembles—strings and wind quintets—are
formed throughout the year for recitals, campus
events, and community events.
Combined
Choirs – The Cal Poly Choirs perform many
programs throughout the school year. The literature
is selected from a wide range of repertoire including
multi-cultural, jazz, and classical. Through their
performances, the choir members acquire performance
skills that are applicable not only in music but
other areas of study as well. As performers in a
Cal Poly choir the members serve as an outreach
program for the entire university.
Jazz
Band – The University Jazz Bands are music
department classes taught by Paul Rinzler and William
Johnson (MU 170/MU 370 – University Jazz Band
and MU 171/MU 371 – Jazz Combo). These classes
are performing ensembles open by audition to any
Cal Poly student. Class time is spent rehearsing
repertoire for public performance and teaching fundamentals
of jazz.
Marching
Band – Mustang Band membership combines
the challenges that college students seek—leadership,
creativity, team work, personal growth, and the
opportunity to experience the rewards and sense
of pride that go along with outstanding achievements.
As a performer each member of the band must analyze
the marching drill and music to be performed. This
analysis and rehearsal will lead to a satisfactory
performance based on knowledge and comprehension.
Repeated rehearsal and public performance help develop
stamina, coordination, teamwork, confidence, and
pride. As such, heavy emphasis is placed on regular
attendance. Role is taken at each rehearsal using
a standardized formula is outlined in the course
syllabus. Mustang Band students are members of a
close-knit organization who experience a pride that
comes from performing in a well-rehearsed field
show—something they will remember long after
their years at Cal Poly.
Wind
Orchestra – The Cal Poly Wind Orchestra
program consists of two performing ensembles: Wind
Orchestra One consisting of 65 student musicians
and Wind Orchestra Two consisting of 50 student
musicians. Together these ensembles perform an annual
series of concerts in Harman Hall in the Performing
Arts Center. These concerts include Bandfest in
the fall, The Pops Concert in the winter, and the
Open House/Poly Royal Concerts and Spring Concert
in the spring. The group performs at the commencement
ceremonies at the end of spring quarter. In addition,
Wind Orchestra One goes on an annual concert tour.
Last year, Wind Orchestra One participated in the
International Music Festival in Sydney, Australia
(from June 24 to July 1, performing concerts in
the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Town Hall. Prior
to their arrival in Sydney, the ensemble performed
in four of New Zealand’s finest concert halls
from June 18 to 23. The Cal Poly Wind Orchestras—ensembles
using just the woodwind, brass, and percussion sections
of a traditional orchestra—create a symphony
of winds whose sound is powerful, bold, and refreshing.
It is music for today—music for you. The Cal
Poly Wind Orchestras have a full, vibrant sound
made up of over 100 young, enthusiastic musicians
who can sound like two hundred… or sound as
one. |

Byzantium:
A Literary Annual – Byzantium is an award-winning
literary magazine, which publishes fiction and poetry
by some of Cal Poly’s finest student writers.
The literary annual receives submissions in the
form of contest entries judged by English faculty;
the winners and honorable mentions in each category
are published in the magazine. Typically, over 100
entries are submitted, and the annual publishes
roughly ten student creations each year. In addition,
two English majors serve as student editors for
the project, procuring funding, editing the winning
entries, organizing a public reading, and selling
the magazine. An Art and Design major serves as
art director for the project, choosing paper and
ink, formatting the magazine, and overseeing printing.
The outcome of this hard work is 400 copies of a
200-page, top-notch literary magazine every year.
Mustang
Daily
CPTV – Cal Poly Television
produces a weekly newscast, Y? Magazine, which airs
on Charter Communications Channel 10 five times
a week. It reaches a potential audience of 65,000
people around the county and can also be seen on
the web at www.polyvision.calpoly.edu, which receives
hundreds of hits a day, both nationally and internationally.
Y? Magazine serves as Cal Poly’s source for
investigative reporting.
Debate
– Student debating has been a part of campus
life in San Luis Obispo since the university opened
its doors as California Polytechnic School in 1903.
In fact, Cal Poly debaters won the school’s
very first trophy. This impressive silver loving
cup is inscribed with the names of the three students
who are recognized as Cal Poly’s first debate
team—H. Floyd Tout, George S. Coonradt, and
Charles J. Emmert.
KCPR Radio – KCPR's
mission is four-fold: 1. Apply Cal Poly's "Learn-By-Doing"
philosophy by maintaining a radio station staffed
completely by students 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. 2. Represent and promote music to broaden
musical knowledge beyond the scope presented by
commercial, profit-driven radio. 3. Connect students
to the local community via public service announcements,
KCPR events, and local business sponsorship. 4.
Inform the community and students of newsworthy
local and worldwide issues and events through daily
newscasts and talk radio shows. |

College
of Liberal Arts Ambassadors - The College of Liberal
Arts Ambassadors began as Nicole Messier's (graduated
Spring 2002) senior project. At the time, CLA was
one of the two colleges on campus that did not have
an ambassador group. Our program is structured similarly
to other ambassador groups on campus, with some
important modifications to address the specific
needs of the CLA. Our main goals are recruitment,
promotion, and celebration of the CLA. We do this
by accompanying tours for potential or incoming
CLA students, spreading the news about events, as
well as publicizing and attending the events. This
is not, however, our only task. We also collaborate
with the College of Liberal Arts Student Council
for events such as Liberal Arts Week, Open House,
and career symposiums. We also have internal events
such as BBQs, holiday parties, dinners and other
events with ambassador groups from all over campus.
Our group meets twice a month, and members are asked
to make at least a year long commitment.
The CLA Ambassadors Program is
always looking for future ambassadors who are enthusiastic
and proud of the CLA and Cal Poly. We recruit for
new ambassadors in the winter quarter. There is
an application process, which includes an interview
with the CLAA executive board and their academic
advisor. If you are interested in joining the College
of Liberal Arts Ambassador Program, (or simply have
some questions) please feel free to contact our
current President, Alison Reeder at: OceanGrl05@aol.com
or the academic advisor, Dr. Doan at adoan@calpoly.edu.
