Bill Kreutzman

Young Bill
Bill Kreutzmann was born on May 7, 1946 in Palo Alto, California. He has been the heartbeat of the Grateful Dead since its inception.

When he was eleven years old, Kreutzmann began taking formal drum lessons. His love for music and talent at the kit led to his creation of several rock bands as a teenager, including the Wildwood Boys and the Legends.

In 1962, Jerry Garcia stopped into Dana Morgan's Music Store where he purchased a banjo from Kreutzmann, who was employed there. Not long after this Garcia also got a job there teaching guitar lessons.

Soon Kreutzmann formed a new band, the Zodiacs featuring Pigpen playing harmonica, Garcia on bass, and Troy Weidenheimer on guitar. By 1965, the Zodiacs became the Warlocks.

When the Warlocks went electric, and became the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart became a full-time member of the band and the two drummers began working diligently to create perfectly locked rhythms.
