Adding and Dropping Classes:
-
For purposes of grade point average, computation of a "WU" is equivalent to an "F."
-
Students may have one and only one "WU" changed to a "W" with the instructor's permission.
-
The petition must be approved and submitted to the Records Office no later than the seventh week of the term following the term the "WU" was assigned, with the exception of Spring Quarter.
-
Students may file a petition by the end of the seventh week of Fall Quarter if the "WU" was assigned the previous Spring Quarter.

Graduation
Requirements |
-
Students need to complete a minimum of 50 quarter units in residence (at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo).
-
Thirty-six of these units must be earned in upper division courses
-
Of the thirty-six upper division units, eighteen must be earned in the major.
-
Twelve units of General Education and Breadth (GE&B) courses must also be completed in residence.
-
CSU International Program units and CSU Intercampus Visitation units are included as "in residence."
-
Extension credit or credit by exam may not be used to fulfill the residence requirement.
-
-
Of the last forty units counted toward the degree, only ten can be earned out of residence.
-
-
-
Maximum Units from Community College:
-
Students may apply a maximum of 105 units from community colleges toward the total number of units needed to graduate. For example, a student who needs 180 units to graduate must complete at least 75 units outside community college.

to Graduation |
How to Determine Remaining General Elective Units:
-
It is really quite simple to determine how many general elective units you still need to complete in order to graduate.
-
First, check to see how many higher education units you have earned.
-
Next, note if any nonbaccalaureate units are included in that figure.
-
Deduct those units. (On your transfer or senior evaluation, nonbaccalaureate units are indicated by parenthesis signs.) If you earned more than 105 units at community college(s), the excess units over 105 must be deducted from the figure. Also, check that you did not repeat any courses you were not eligible to repeat and that you did not enroll in repeatable courses for more than the maximum number of units allowable.
-
Next add up the unit-value of all the course requirements you still need to complete. Make sure you will have completed at least 60 upper division (300-400 level) units.
-
If the sum from these calculations is equal to or greater than the number of units you need to graduate, you have no remaining general elective requirements.
-
Sue needs 186 units to graduate.
-
She transferred 110 baccalaureate level units from community college.
-
At Cal Poly she has completed six non-baccalaureate units (Math 100 and Math 104) and twenty-four baccalaureate units.
-
She is currently enrolled in (but has not completed) twelve required units.
-
She has forty more required units to graduate.

Change of
Major and Readmission Policies
|
Minimum Expectations for Students Wanting to Change Majors:
Each Liberal Arts major program is "impacted," which means the departments must turn away eligible applicants from other institutions or high schools. Consequently, the major departments have high standards for students wanting to transfer into the College. Cal Poly students need to know that they may have to transfer to another university in order to pursue a degree program other than the one they have been admitted to at Cal Poly.
Each major department sets its own criteria for internal transfers (Cal Poly students who want to change majors). The criteria listed below represent MINIMUM expectations only. Each quarter varies, depending on the pool of applicants' grade point averages and levels of preparation. In addition to meeting the individual department standards below, all students transferring into the College of Liberal Arts must be in good academic standing at the time of transfer.
Senate Resolution regarding Cal Poly students who wish to change majors (Word file.)
Minimum Expectations: |
Art and Design |
- Academic:
All applicants must have a Cal Poly GPA (CPSLO Cum) of at least 2.5 and a
Current GPA of at least 2.3 (on the last completed quarter’s grade report). Failure
to meet either of these academic minimums renders the applicant ineligible to apply. Students on academic probation are not eligible.
- Portfolio:
All applicants must submit a portfolio of their own work that meets all minimum
requirements outlined in the Portfolio Requirements, and meet the portfolio due date immediately preceding the review date desired.
- Notification to the Department:
The first step is to come to the department office and notify the department of your intent to change your major to our program. This can be done after the beginning the third (3rd) week of Fall or Winter quarter. You will be given specific information regarding portfolio requirements, including assigned project options for graphic design and studio art, review processing forms, and a due date for all materials (in the Major Change Applicant letter).
- Portfolio Submission for Review:
Submit a portfolio of your work appropriate for the concentration of your choice. All required materials must be submitted together by the due date as outlined in the Major Change Applicant letter.
- Review Outcome Notification:
Shortly after the review date, you will be notified via your Cal Poly email address if you passed the portfolio review or not, and that your portfolio is ready for pickup. If you have been accepted your major change form will be processed by the department office.

Journalism |
Academic Requirements
Each student who wishes to become a candidate for admission to the journalism major must have completed the following courses with the minimum grades and GPA shown:

2. Jour 203 Writing for the Media with a grade of B or better.
3. Choice of:
Jour 219 – Mass Media in a Multicultural Society or
Jour 201 – Journalism History
With a grade of B or better. In the event the grade in the first choice is a C, a student may still qualify by taking one of the other options and earning a B or better.
Students MUST submit their transfer request immediately after they have completed the required transfer courses. No other journalism courses will be considered in the transfer request.
4. The higher education GPA and Cal Poly GPA must be 2.7 or better . The record must be free of incomplete grades and F's in specific courses required in the journalism program (see curriculum sheet).
Students who fail to meet these specific academic performance requirements are not encouraged to pursue admission to the Journalism Department.
Procedure
After students have completed the requirements stated above, they should pick up a "Petition to Change Major" form from the Office of Academic Records (Bldg 01-222). A clear, concise, positive statement of the reasons for the change is important. Try to provide an idea of career goals. If the space to do this on the form is inadequate, attach a separate sheet and elaborate on reasons for the change.
Attach a copy of your Cal Poly transcripts and evaluation in previous major, if you were a transfer student.
Submit these materials to the department administrative assistant.
NO upper-division journalism courses will be considered in determining eligibility. |
| Liberal Studies |
The Liberal Studies Department will accept internal transfers who meet the following criteria:
- Have taken courses at Cal Poly for two quarters.
- A grade of “C” or better in Math 116/117 or 118 (pre-calculus) or higher math course and Engl 134 (Freshman composition)
- An overall GPA of 2.7 or better. Given the University’s commitment to produce potential teachers with strong science and math backgrounds, students with a GPA between 2.3 and 2.7 from the Colleges of Engineering, Architecture, or Science and Math, OR students with GPA between 2.3 and 2.7 who are able to provide evidence of strong science and math skills by their successful completion of several courses in either discipline, may request special consideration and/or an interview with the Dept. Chair. We will not accept students on academic probation in their own department.
PLEASE NOTE: The Liberal Studies major prepares individuals to be admitted into a multi-subject (K-6) teaching credential program. It is imperative that you are contemplating a teaching career to apply for change of major consideration. As of 2005 there is no longer a General Track (Independent Course of Study )in Liberal Studies.
Students may apply during the first three weeks of the quarter. After the application deadline (end of week three) the applications will be evaluated. Notice of acceptances will be sent to those who meet the above criteria no later than the fourth week of the quarter. If you feel that you meet the criteria, fill out the application form on and return it to the Liberal Studies Office, Bldg. 53, Room 211. Be sure to attach a letter and copy of your transcripts (obtain from Mustang Info). Positions are limited, therefore, only the most qualified students will be accepted. If you feel there is additional information that we do not have regarding your situation, please make an appointment to discuss the matter with us. You may contact the Liberal Studies Department Office by calling 756-2935. |
| Modern Languages & Literatures |
Students who wish to be considered as a Modern Languages and Literatures (MLL) Major must petition the Department to review the student's academic record and application for transfer.
The Modern Languages and Literatures Department has developed a set of criteria and guidelines to aid prospective students in making an informed decision about the MLL Major, as well as to inform students about the requirements they must meet prior to being considered for admission to the MLL Major.
Criteria For Eligibility
- Class Level:
Students must be at least in the sophomore level by the time they enter the MLL Major. Students may apply at the end of their freshman year. MLL will not readily accept applications from senior-level students.
- Academic Standing:
Students must have a good academic standing in their department of origin and in courses taken elsewhere. A minimum 2.5 GPA overall and a minimum of 2.75 GPA in courses in the primary language (Spanish at this time) is required. Students with a GPA that does not meet this requirement may still apply, but they must address in their application any extenuating circumstances that may exist which make a justifiable case for acceptance into the major.
- Course Prerequisites:
Students must have credit in at least one of the following: Spanish 103, 121, 122, 123, 124, and/or 233 or their equivalent (e.g., AP credit, credit by examination, substitute credit, credit at a community college, etc.), and they must have also taken at least one Spanish course at Cal Poly. Students must have sequential credit in Spanish courses. That is to say that course prerequisites cannot be taken after the fact. Students who have not met these minimum requirements, but who have a demonstrated interest in the Major by having taken coursework in the secondary language will be given equal consideration.
Preference will be given to students who are officially enrolled in second-language courses, students who are minors and/or have made significant strides in completing the minimum requirements set forth in this document.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Prospective candidates will be required to write a letter of application, in English, addressed to the MLL Major Screening Committee. Included in this letter will be statements on how the candidate has met the published criteria, extenuating circumstances that directly address specific criteria published, if any, why the candidate wishes to change majors, and how this major will enhance and/or impact the student's academic and career goals. Candidates must indicate their choice of secondary language. Students who are flexible in their choice of secondary language will be given preference.
Also included in the letter of application will be the applicant's name, identification number, address, phone number, and email address. This information is needed so we can review academic records and reach candidates for the oral interview.
- Along with the application letter, candidates must include as part of the application a minimum of two (2) graded writing assignments, written in the primary or secondary language.
Candidates, if they so choose, may also include as optional material any creative work, written assignments, journals, and/or videos in either the primary or secondary language. Including any optional material DOES NOT mean that the candidate will have a greater likelihood of being accepted into the major.
- Applicants must submit all materials to the department office no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday of the 5th week of the spring quarter. Applications for internal transfer are accepted only during the spring quarter.
- Candidates who demonstrate a serious commitment to language study through coursework and who have good writing ability in the primary language (Spanish) will be chosen as finalists.
Those who are chosen as finalists will also be required to have an oral interview with the Screening Committee which will make final recommendations to the MLL Department Chair and the College of Liberal Arts. All decisions are final.
Interested students should contact:
Dr. William Martinez, Jr., Dept. Chair Bldg. 47, Rm. 28 x62889 wmartine@calpoly.edu
Lou Greenberg, Administrative Asst. Bldg. 47, Rm. 28 x61205 lgreenbe@calpoly.edu |
| Music |
-
All applicants must have achieved a GPA in GE courses of at least 2.5 and a current GPA of at least 2.0. Failure to meet either of these academic minimums renders the applicant ineligible until there is verification that minimum academic standards have been achieved. No students on academic probation will be considered.
- All applicants must perform and demonstrate musical and technical proficiency at an audition/interview with the music faculty.
- Audition/interviews will be held on or around the 5th week of each quarter. Students should contact the department at the beginning of the quarter to schedule an audition time; all materials must be turned in prior to the audition.
- All applicants must submit a Petition to Change Major Form (available from the Records Office), and in addition, must submit the Supplementary Information sheet available in the department office.
- Submit academic transcripts to the department office. Grades for all college level course work will be reviewed, including work from the most recent quarter completed.

Petition to Change Majors forms can be obtained in the Political Science department office or the Records Office. |
| Psychology |
Students may apply for internal transfer during the first 4 weeks of the fall, winter, and spring quarters if they meet minimum eligibility criteria. If space is available and they are accepted, they will be admitted during the sixth week before registration for the next quarter begins.
Eligibility Criteria
- Three graded Cal Poly 200-400 level Psychology courses (if applying to Psychology). Three graded Cal Poly Child Development courses (if applying to Child Development). Applicants to CD may count PSY 201/202 in place of one CD course.
- Grades in our courses must average to at least a B.
- Students must have a 2.8 quarterly GPA for the two quarters before application.
Academic Senate Restrictions
- There is no waiting list.
- The number of times a student applies cannot affect decisions.
Threat of Academic Disqualification is Not a Factor
- Threat of academic disqualification will not be considered in decisions.
- You may have to continue taking classes in your current major to avoid academic disqualification.
Selection is Objective & Competitive
- Internal transfer into a psychology or child development major will be based on objective criteria, just as your admission to Cal Poly was based largely on high school or community college GPA and SAT scores.
- Selection is competitive based on GPA in Psychology or Child Development courses completed at Cal Poly. For Psychology, we consider GPA for all graded 200-400 level Psychology courses completed at Cal Poly. For Child Development, we consider all graded Child Development courses (and PSY 201/202 if taken) completed at Cal Poly. Other academic criteria will be considered in the case of ties.
We regret that we do not have room to accommodate all students that seek entrance into our majors and wish we could offer entrance to all interested students. We normally accept 10 psychology students and 5 CD students quarterly. You may also wish to consider a psychology or child development minor, transferring to a less impacted CSU offering a similar program, or going to the Career Center to make sure that psychology or child development is right for you.
Please contact Dr. Shawn Burn, Professor & Associate Chair, if you have questions (sburn@calpoly.edu, Building 47 23-C, phone: 756-2934).

Earned
hours, quality hours and quality points:
Earned
hours are the number of units earned thus
far.
Quality
hours are only those units attempted
that affect the grade point average.
Thus, units earned with
CR are not included in quality hours,
but units representing a failed attempt
("F's") are included.
Quality
points are the number of points added
into the grade point average from grades
earned.

An undergraduate
student is automatically placed on
academic probation when the current,
Cal Poly cumulative, or higher education
grade point average drops below 2.0.
To calculate a gpa deficiency, simply
multiply the student's quality hours
by two. Compare this figure to the
student's quality points. The difference
represents the deficiency.
-
Administrative
Probation:
-
A student
may be placed on administrative probation
for withdrawing from all or a substantial
portion of a program of study in
two successive terms or in any three
terms; repeatedly failing to progress
toward the stated degree objective;
failing to comply with an academic
requirement or regulation which is
routine for all students or a defined
group of students.
-
Academic
Disqualification:
-
An
undergraduate student on academic
probation for two consecutive
terms is subject to academic
disqualification. An
undergraduate student on academic
probation is subject to disqualification
when:
-
As a freshman or sophomore student
(less than 90 quarter units of college
credit completed) the student is
22.5 or more quality points below
a 2.00 (C) in all units attempted
(higher education GPA) or in all
units attempted at Cal Poly (Cal
Poly cumulative GPA).
-
As a junior student (90 to 134 quarter
units of college credit completed)
the student is 13.5 or more quality
points below 2.00 (C) in all units
attempted (higher education GPA)
or in all units attempted at Cal
Poly (Cal Poly cumulative GPA).
-
As a senior student (135 or more
quarter units of college credit
completed) the student is 9 or more
quality points below a 2.00 (C)
in all units attempted (higher education
GPA) or in all units attempted at
Cal Poly (Cal Poly cumulative GPA).
In
addition to the above disqualification
standards applicable to students on probation,
the President may designate a campus official
to act to disqualify an individual not
on probation when the following circumstances
exist:
-
At the end of any term, the student
has fewer cumulative grade points
than cumulative units attempted, and
-
The cumulative grade point deficiency
is so great that in view of the student's
overall educational record, it seems
unlikely that the deficiency will
be removed within a reasonable period.
A
student who is placed on probation or
who is subject to disqualification at
the end of an enrollment period will be
notified by a message on the grade report
which is issued following the end of the
term in which the student's performance
fails to meet the prescribed conditions.
In cases where a student ordinarily would
be disqualified at the end of a term save
for the impossibility of making timely
notification, the student may be advised
by the student's school dean that the
disqualification is to be effective at
the end of the next term.
-
Repeating
a Class for a Change of Grade:
-
Under
specific conditions, students may repeat
up to 20 units in order to improve the
grade point average. The initial grade
must be a "D+" or lower. If the repeated
(second grade) is lower than
the first, both failing grades will
be computed in the gpa. For example,
if a student recieves a "D+" in Math

Readmission Policies |
Continuing student eligibility and readmission application:
Continuing students who have not registered for one or two quarters need not reapply for admission. (Summer quarter is a regular quarter and therefore counts in determining length of absence.)
Returning students who have not registered for three or more quarters must file an application for readmission and pay the application fee.
Students returning to their previous major have a later filing period than students who are attempting to enter a new major. (See "Application deadlines for returning students" in the Cal Poly catalogs.)
Former Cal Poly students who want to return to a new major must follow the same application deadlines that new students do. No preference will be given to returning students who are applying to a new major.
