The College of Liberal Arts Advancement’s goal is to support academic excellence and student success. We are deeply committed to ensuring that the disciplines in Liberal Arts remain strong, inclusive and affordable. To this end, the college is excited to introduce you to two new initiatives.
First, the college is in the early planning phase of a renovation and expansion of the Davidson Music Building to address the urgent need for improved instructional space and programming in music, theater and dance. This includes the design of a multi-year capital campaign to fund this exciting project.
Second, the college is implementing a Diversity Enhancement Plan to identify ways to increase the diversity of faculty, students and staff at Cal Poly. We believe that people from diverse economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds bring the diversity of thought essential to an educated populace in today’s society. We recognize that the costs of college are becoming more prohibitive as the cost of education at Cal Poly increases, and we are working with our alumni and friends to create more scholarships for students with financial need.
With the assistance of the University Diversity Enhancement Council and the Provost’s Office, the College of Liberal Arts spearheaded the 1st Generation Initiative in the spring of 2005 to promote support for students who are the first in their immediate families to attend and graduate from Cal Poly. The college is taking a leadership role to address a common obstacle for 1st generation students – the costs of higher education. We are especially excited to announce the launch of a second initiative, our 1st Generation Endowment Campaign: a $700,000 endowment that will provide $2,500 a year to support three CLA students for 4 years into perpetuity. So far, 40 faculty and staff in the college have donated over $7,000 towards the establishment of this endowment.
Finally, the College of Liberal Arts and our 17 departments and programs benefit greatly from your direct contributions. Gifts to the college and its departments greatly enhance the educational experience for all of our students. Thank you for your generosity.
