DEPARTMENT NEEDS

Faculty and students have begun to confer informally about the priority of needs in CLA programs. These categories have emerged; click on a department.

 

ART AND DESIGN: Write the chair about your recommendations.

  1. more class sections of required major classes

  2. instructional materials/live models/classroom furniture, etc.

  3. more/better equipment/technology/software/technical support

  4. more student assistants

  5. art gallery program

  6. guest speakers

 

COMMUNICATION STUDIES: Write the chair about your recommendations.

  1. increase some of the course offerings in major courses to assist
    students in completing their degrees in a timely fashion. Courses in
    the major core at the 200 and 300 levels would be targeted

  2. enhance the budget of the Debate Program, which is
    subject to having its funding cut by the Instructionally Related
    Actvities Board

  3. set aside certain GE course sections, hopefully with the cooperation
    of other CLA departments, for Speech Communication majors only, or CLA
    majors only

  4. develop and possibly add new courses and new course areas to the
    major. Allows majors a wider selection of courses to choose from to
    help tailor make their major experience.

  5. purchase new equipment and maintain the equipment we now have in a
    better fashion. Laptop computers, video cameras and related equipment,
    and other needs of the department would be met.

  1. access: for extra sections of courses in which it is hard to enroll

  1. an additional broadcast instructor for radio

  2. more PR courses

  3. new CPTV studio

  4. more broadcast classes required in the core

  7. CPTV camera replacements every two years

  8. Mac lab

  1. insure the LS Advisor position (SSP1A) continues

  2. fund LS 211/212 to satisfy GE

  3. course access throughout the program, especially Dance/Movement

 

MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES: Write the chair about your recommendations.

  2. Additional sections of Major courses

  3. Replacement of PIRC equipment

  1. lecturers to provide the class piano, class voice, and small ensembles to meet the demand

  2. replacement and repair of instruments and electronics

  3. promotion of events

 

PHILOSOPHY: Write the chair about your recommendations.

  1. increase 300-level philosophy offerings to help students complete major electives

  2. increase percentage of ethics courses to facilitate concentration

 

POLITCAL SCIENCE: Write the chair about your recommendations.

  1. policy/methods: more courses in quantitative methods and policy. This is a departmental long-term plan, resulting
    from surveys of students and faculty and extensive discussions.

  2. law/hilosophy: more courses in law and political philosophy

  3. comparative politics: more courses in comparative politics and international
    relations. This is a departmental long-term plan.

  4. expand courses in GE to meet demand

 

PSYCHOLOGY/CHILD DEVELOPMENT: Write the chair about your recommendations.

  1. offering additional sections of courses (including classes for
    majors only that are capped at 20-30 students and courses that we
    currently offer infrequently)

  2. buying additional hours of professional CLA staff advising for
    PSY/CD students

  3. buying lab equipment including updating of computers and software

  4. buying materials for class demonstrations including videos,
    equipment, published tests, etc.

  23. Costume trailer-put a 2nd trailer there for the costume shop

  1. enhance IRA funds, to pay theatre costs and hire guest choreographers

  2. keep the costs down for students who attend concerts, and who participate as
    performers

  3. lower class size for dance appreciation.

  4. offer dance composition more than every other
    year

  6. help to fund the Spring Student Show

  1. upper-division classes in the Minor, esp USCP and GE areas
