2016 Academy of American Poets Contest Now Open

The English Department’s 2016 Academy of American Poets contest is now open. All registered Cal Poly students are eligible to enter and the winning student will receive a $100 cash prize. Students may submit up to three poems totaling no more than 150 lines by Thursday, May 12 at 4 p.m. Learn more here.

LGBTQIAP History Exhibit Open Until Friday

The LGBTQIAP History Exhibit will be open until Friday, April 29 in Kennedy Library’s Community Gallery on the first floor. This OneArchives traveling exhibit acts as an educational viewpoint, providing documentation of major milestones in LGBTQIAP rights through the work of LGBTQIAP individuals and communities.

‘Dancing the Nation’ with Tani Sebro

5 – 6 p.m. Monday, April 25
Fisher Science (Bldg. 33), Room 286

Doctoral candidate at the University of Hawaii and 2015 Moscotti Fellow for Graduate Studies of Southeast Asia Tani Sebro will give her talk “Dancing the Nation:
Exile, Mobility & Displacement Along the Thai-Burma Border.” Sebro will explain that dance and song promote intercultural group coherence and hold potential for political resistance even though they are often overlooked in times of war. Specifically, she will discuss how dance, song and theatre have reinvigorated displaced Burmese refugees’ aspirations for sovereignty.

CLA Speaks: Leah Ceccarelli and the ‘Public Image of the Scientist'

Leah Ceccarelli presents her talk, “The Contested Public Ethos of the 21st Century Scientist – An Analysis of the Public Image of the Scientist: Hero or Fool?”. She will discuss the public image of scientists in contemporary culture by presenting three case studies and analyzing them rhetorically. Ceccarelli will also suggest which rhetorical possibilities are most helpful and most harmful to society.

Gregory Smith’s Clarinet Master Class

11 a.m. Thursday, April 28
Davidson Music Center (Bldg. 45), Room 218

Gregory Smith, principle clarinetist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will present a master class for Cal Poly music students. The Music Department’s leading
clarinet students will perform and be critiqued. The master class is free and open to the public.

Timothy Miller presents ‘The New Ecovillages’

4:10 – 6 p.m. Friday, April 29
Baker Science (Bldg. 180), Room 101

Timothy Miller, professor of religious studies at the University of Kansas, is the leading researcher on international communities in the world and is the author
of several books on the subject. In his presentation “The New Ecovillages: Can Small Communities Save Our Planet?” he will discuss these communities throughout history and presents their economic, environmental, social and personal benefits.

Chris Perondi’s ‘The Stunt Dog Experience’ (Cal Poly Arts)

4 p.m. Saturday, April 30
Cohan Center (Bldg. 6)

This performance will delight all audiences of all ages with high-energy excitement. Every show includes interactive crowd participation. With amazing tricks,
stunts, comedy antics, and athletic feats, Chris Perondi and the dogs put on an unforgettable show. Perondi adopts all his dogs from shelters and promotes adoption as well as spaying and neutering during his show. Find more information including a promotional video here.

Paul Woodring – Forbes Pipe Organ Recital (Cal Poly Arts)

3 p.m. Sunday, May 1
Cohan Center (Bldg. 6)

Paul Woodring’s fifth Forbes Pipe Organ recital will feature a selection of works from masters J.S. Bach and Maurice Durufle, as well as a celebration of music
from Portugal, France, Italy, and Germany. Works from Gilbert and Sullivan, Scott Joplin and a Russian toccata will also be performed. See the complete program and more here.
