Submission Guidelines
To submit your article for consideration to Between the Species, please follow the guidelines for initial submissions. If your article is accepted for publication, we will request that you follow the additional guidelines for final submissions.
Guidelines for initial submissions
Our guidelines for initial submissions are somewhat weaker than our guidelines for final submissions. Please note that the use of heading styles in MS-Word, although not required for initial submissions, is required for final submissions to ensure that we can easily produce accessible html and pdf conversions.
How to format your article
- Prepare the article for blind refereeing by removing any references to the author and listing the title, author, and affiliation on a title page. Save your file as an MS-Word .doc file.
- The article should include an abstract not to exceed 150 words on a separate page. This should be the second page of your article.
- Use the Harvard (author-date) citation style. For a description of this citation style, visit the Harvard style UseIt page from the University of Queensland or the Harvard citation style page from The University of Western Australia. For a more detailed resource with instructions on how to cite just about anything including electronic resources, such as blogs and on-line images, visit the Harvard style bibliographies and references page from The University of Leeds.
- We do not publish amplifying footnotes or endnotes. If what you would add in a footnote is substantial, please work it into the body of your article.
- Include a list of references on a separate page.
- For the initial submission, figures (images, diagrams, charts) may be included as part of the MS-Word file. If the article is accepted for publication, you will be asked to provide each figure as a separate file (see below). All figures should be numbered sequentially (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) and must be referenced within the body of the article.
- Use the symbol font in MS-Word for symbols (such as Greek letters).
- You may use the equation editor in MS-Word to insert equations in your initial submission. For final submission guidelines concerning symbols and equations, please contact the editor.
How to submit your article
- The article should be submitted as an MS-Word .doc file. Please note that we cannot currently accept the new .docx format used by Word 2007. If you did not compose your article in MS-Word, and you cannot save in MS-Word's .doc format, you may submit a .pdf version of your article for the initial submission only.
- The article may be submitted as an attachment to an e-mail. This is our preferred method of submission. Send your article to and make “BTS Submission” the subject of your message.
- The article may be submitted by regular mail by sending the file on a
CD. Please label your CD clearly. We regret we can no longer accept floppy-disks. We do not return CDs unless the author includes a stamped, self-addressed CD mailer. Please send the CD containing your article to:

Guidelines for final submissions
Articles accepted for publication should satisfy the following additional criteria. Ensuring that you satisfy all the criteria will help us get your article published quickly and efficiently.
How to format your final submission
- All text must be Times-Roman 12 pt font, black on white background, and double-spaced.
- If an article has sections, the author should use the appropriate headings style in MS-Word to ensure proper (accessible) conversion to HTML and pdf.
- The article must not contain headers or footers (we use these in the preparation of your article for posting on the web).
Special instructions for articles including figures
- For the final submission, figures, including charts, must be sent as separate graphic files. Our preferred graphic format is high-quality .jpg. We can also accept .eps files. Graphics must not exceed 600 px in width and may be resized during the production of your article.
- Please note that to satisfy accessibility requirements (our site is Section 508 compliant in the US) any figures must include a brief text description (not to exceed 15 words) that can be used in the production of the HTML and pdf files. If your figure is somewhat complex, you may be asked by the editors to provide a longer description of your image. Text descriptions for figures must be sent as a separate MS-Word file. Authors are encouraged to think carefully about whether a figure really adds clarity to the article.
- Please note that the author must either hold the copyright for all figures and images submitted for publication or include a proper citation. We cannot publish figures or images whose source is not properly cited or whose source is unknown.
