COURSES SUGGESTED FOR INTERACTIVE STUDIES
PROGRAM
The following courses have been suggested by faculty to be appropriate
for an Interactive Studies program. They are presented in no particular
order except this: already-existing courses are presented first; courses
yet to be proposed are presented after. The list is not exhaustive. Some
of the courses might be required for the program; others might be elective.
The number of units for the program has not yet been determined.
We are seeking input from students, faculty, potential corporate sponsors,
and the public. Write to suggest
other possible courses to include, or to make suggestions about the program
in general.
Existing Courses:
English 411, Writing Interactive Documents. (Smith) 4 units. Existing. Rhetoric and writing of multimedia
art or information pieces, typically with Director or HyperCard as authoring
tools.
English 419. Independent Multimedia Projects. (Various) Existing. 1-4 units.
English 450, Computer Applications for English Teachers.
(Lant) 4 units. Existing. Approved at state level for credentialling. Provides
teachers with the skills needed to take advantage of electronic resources
for teaching.
English 519. Web Authoring. (Smith)
4 units. Existing. Writing pages, managing sites, understanding the uses
and impact of the Web.
Art 323, Introduction to Digital Image making (Bergman).
The course is based on the use of color slide photography scanning and
printing via dye sub prints. The course is an introduction to photoshop,
scanning,resolution, image color and control, the use of masks, layers
and the basic potential of image composition using photoshop adn photographs
as the starting point. Also emphasizes personal style developoment both
with color photography and the modification via digital controls.
Art 466, Advanced Digital Image Making (Bergman),deals
extensively with advanced techniques of Photoshop 3.0. Knowledge of Photoshop
will be used to produce visually stimulating ideas that capture a personal
vision and express students' voice using the digital medium. To accomplish
this goal, we will be working primarily with scanned photographic images
and manipulating these images using the features of Photoshop. We will
examine the technical aspects of working with images in Photoshop as well
as critical issues such as, the role of the artist, issues of content and
aesthetics, legal and moral issues and the role of digital technology in
today's changing world.
Art 467, Designing For the World Wide Web,focuses primarily
on the production of Web pages using HTML - the hypertext language the
drives the Web. This class will address some of the following Internet
Basics: What is the World Wide Web and what is all the hype about? How
is it used for corporate communication? How the Internet has evolved from
a research tool for the government and scientists to an information resource
for the general public? What are the implications of this explosive growth?

Humanities 402 Subtitle: Ethical Issues in Cyberspace
(Michelfelder). Existing. 4 units.
CSc 405 Computer Networks. [CSc] 4 units including
1 laboratory. Existing. Network architectures and protocols: network performance
analysis, etc.
CSc 414 Authoring Languages and Systems [CSc] 4 units
including 1 laboratory. Existing, but needs redefinition. Advanced techniques
utilizing the computer to assist individualized instruction. Comparison
between authoring languages and authoring systems.
Courses yet to be proposed:
GrCxxx - Understanding Graphic Communication. The course
covers the relationship between graphic communication history, technology,
and communication. History and theories are used to explain the presence
of digital technologies today and provides the student with a methodology
for forecasting the future. (proposed by Levenson)
Music xxxx. - Introduction to Composing - Fundamental
concepts in music composition. Creative projects. Study of compositional
techniques, development, and structure. Analysis of examples from the literature.

MU3XX - Introduction to Sound Design - Fundamental
tools ofelectroacoustic sound design. Concepts and application of music
studio procedure, recording, synthesis, and MIDI. Studio Projects. (proposed
by Barata.)
MU310 - SoundDesign: Recording - Exploring creative
use of recording technology. Analog and digital equipment for recording
music. Analysis and creative projects. (proposed by Barata.)
MU411 -Sound Design: Synthesis - Compositional application
of sound synthesis techniques. Realization of computer music. Creative
projects. (proposed by Barata.)
CSc 4xx Computer Human Interaction. [Beug, Fisher,Dalbey]
4 units including 1 laboratory. New. Design, evaluation and implementation
of interactive computing systems for human use.
CSc 4xx Information Retrieval [Beug, joint with the
librarians] 4 units including 1 laboratory. New. Principles for the design
evaluation and use of information retrieval systems. Indexing, storage
and retrieval of multimedia information.
CSc 4xx Computers & Music. [Beug, joint with music
department] 4 units including 1 laboratory. New. History and practice of
using computers to compose and synthesize music. computer based music analysis.
